Has Anyone Ever Sold Anything on EBay?

My sister started selling on EBay as a result of her SIL selling some things for her and teaching her how to do it. She has a blast and found a way to clear out all the "treasures" collected through the years.
I am interested in doing the same thing but haven't ever gotten around to starting.
I've seen some negative things recently on how it's not as good as it used to be as far as new rules and things.
I was watching a show and the whole house was decorated from the 70's. I know that prop people use EBay to get authentic stuff for sets.
My sister had a lot of boxes of old nails and people were scooping them up to use for authentic furniture, home building, etc.
Any thought?
 

I have sold on Ebay ever since the very beginning... and I stopped because Ebay favours the buyer ..almost 100 %... so what was happening is that people could say they never received their item.. even if they'd sent it registered post.. and Ebay would immediately refund their money...


It never actually happened to me, but it happened to so many sellers that I know, that i decided not to sell there any more..plus their fees are high..

.. easier to sell on Vinted... and no fees...
 
I sold things all the time on eBay and recently thought I would de-clutter some more. HOWEVER, things have changed! I am angry about it too! You can no longer use Paypal to take payments - eBay itself takes the payment then wants your bank account number to deposit NET funds at the end of the month. They take out fees and taxes and issue you a 1099 at the end of the year, reporting your "income" to the IRS. It is no longer just yard sale fun. You have to have a business.
All the other sale sites are doing the same thing - Etsy, Mercari, Offer Up, etc.... No love on online. Craigslist and Neighborhood (and maybe Facebook Marketplace? I'm not on there) are the only places I know, right now, to sell used items. Just remember NEVER give out your phone # or address and always have, at least, one other person with you for the exchange. Cash only!

I haven't sold anything on eBay since the early days when people would mail me a check then I would send the item. Except once I went ahead and sent the item but then that person never sent their check to me. Oh well, my mistake!

I do like to still buy stuff from eBay. While I was working I would buy used tops of my favorite brand, it was so much cheaper that way even tho a large percentage would not appeal to me once I tried them on. It was sufficiently inexpensive I would simply donate the ones I didn't like to the local donation/thrift store.

The only thing I've bought from eBay since I retired was an old $100 framed print by an artist (JE Meadows) that I like (but apparently no one else likes since even the original paintings don't sell for much, such as only 12k dollars). It was a UK seller tho so I had to pay a chunk to get it shipped to the US.
 
I helped my daughter start an eBay shop about... oh golly, at least 18 years ago. We absolutely loved it... got rid of a lot of things but also made some foolish... *very* foolish mistakes that I still regret. (Selling way below market value, and especially considering what some of it would be worth now.) :(

Bottom line is that when postage costs started skyrocketing, buyers whined and complained as if we set the costs, but things were always weighed at the post office. Then there were the people trying to get things for free and demanding a refund when tracking said it was delivered. "Maybe it was, but it wasn't in MY mailbox!" :cry:

Got to be too much of a headache, so she hung it up. eBay was very different back then... you could actually find some true treasures there and they actually had decent fees... not true for either any longer.

Facebook marketplace is free.. for the first week at least... but there's so many weirdos on there..

I had sold on eBay for many years, as Holydolly mentioned, eBay favors the buyer and many crooks take advantage of that. I would NOT recommend selling on eBay.
 
I've purchased but probably not in two years or more.

I had a co-worker who had an Ebay shop. She did OK. I think it was a bit of a hobby for her. I say give it a go if interested. I've thought I could do a shop but I've just donated things I didn't want.

Oh I did do a booth years ago in an antique mall. For one month only. Made over 1000 dollars. Mostly other dealers bought my stuff. I priced to sell.

Etsy also, but there are scam buyers out there. It's really pathetic. They claim they didn't get the item. Even the delivery confirmation doesn't seem to protect the seller. People lie. You'll have to have a source for packaging materials. Learn to make boxes out of larger boxes. For my co-worker, if we got anything in bubble wrapped, I saved it for her.

I've taken boxes and packaging material to a vintage store in town that has an Etsy shop.
 
After my wife passed away, I sold all the Swarovski animals I bought her, plus a bunch of other stuff. I still buy some things on eBay, but have not sold anything in years.
 
Iā€™ve bought many products off eBay but never sold anything on eBay. Instead I sold on Etsy. The software was easy to use, the clientele wonderful. I solid a few hundred items and really enjoyed it. In fact, Iā€™ve thought about starting back up. It gives me something productive to focus on while bringing in extra cash.
 
I sold on ebay for many years then stopped, never had an issue. This year I went and sold a couple of items but it is way more complicated and now I will have to declare to the CRA. FB marketplace buyers look for cheap, don't bother trying to sell an item of worth. I have stuff that I would like to sell but it is so much work.:LOL:
 
The most expensive item I purchased on Ebay was my car with 2000 miles on the clock. That was without even seeing it and on condition they delivered it some 250 miles.

Speaking of old nails, I saved all the nails that came out of the walls and ceiling in my house and sold them too. I was selling old, rusty bent nails that were really old (house was built in 1850). As soon as I listed them they were sold.

I sold a variety of items on eBay. I had an eBay store and was a powerseller at one point. I sold a lot of my old jewelry among all kinds of other things. If I could package it, I sold it. Since I was already selling brand new guitar strings on Amazon, I started putting them in my store as well. I could not keep them in stock there. They sold fast.

When I moved here I stopped selling completely. Occasionally I will sell something on fakebook Marketplace but not very often. I am done with all that. Now I donate. Sometimes I purchase something there but not very often.
