Has anyone had diverticulitis? If so, what were your symptoms?

I'm seldom sick, but the past two days, I was sick as a dog. I almost went to the ER but waited it out. I'm feeling a lot better now. I've never had diverticulitis, but I do have diverticula so I suppose I'm prone to get diverticulitis. I was just curious what other peoples symptoms were because I have an idea that, that's what made me so sick.

Well, it that is what you think you have, make an appointment sooner than later.
Or go to the ER as you mentioned.
You will at the very least need antibiotics, and perhaps IV antibiotics.

It is nothing to mess with. You do not "wait out" diverticulitis!
If I have a flare up again, I will. It might not have been diverticulitis, I was grasping at straws. I was perfectly fine until I had ate some onions earlier. My sister-in- law thought it might be a 24 hour bug. I'm still weak, but feel much better. I'll just have to watch what I eat. Thanks for your input.

Norovirus has similar symptoms. I got it once while traveling. Sick as a dog for 2 days, then it went away. You need medical professionals to diagnose what you have, as there are so many digestive illnesses we can get. Feel better!
It could have been norovirus, I don't know. I was just grasping at straws. It started at 2am in the morning. I was trying to avoid calling "911" and going to the ER. Thanks for your input.

I'm still a little weak (from laying in bed a day and a half) but feel much better. It might not have been diverticulitis. I was just grasping at straws since it came on so fast and I'd eaten something I probably shouldn't have, Thanks for your input.

I had it years ago. I was miserable for about two weeks. Mine started with pain in the lower left side of my abdomen with a slight fever. Doctor gave me two weeks worth of Ciprofloxacin and that took care of it. I also took Tylenol until my fever broke. Drink lots of water and eat light until everything returns to normal.

Several years ago I had diverticulitis.I was extremely constipated with no appetite and in pain for many days. I finally went to the ER and was hospitalized for a few days and put on heavy-duty antibiotics. It was not fun!

I hope you feel better very soon.
I would think the antibiotics made the constipation worse, or was it the cause?

I recently had diverticulitis. What I remember the most is the pain. I was not constipated though. Just riding on a bumpy road on the way to the doctor caused me pain. I couldn’t tell if the pain was coming from my intestines or bladder. Doctor later told me the pain was from inflamed intestine pressing against a full bladder . Nothing actually wrong with my bladder.
He started me on antibiotics and after a day I immediately began to feel better.
I’d always heard diverticulitis could be caused by eating nuts and seeds. When I asked the doctor about changing my diet he said ā€œeat what you want, newer research had changed the opinion on this.

After being so sick, I read up on diverticulitis. I see where they don't limit what you can eat now. I love corn and onions (besides nuts and seeds) that I was told could cause a flare up. In retrospect, I think I had a severe stomach virus that came out of nowhere. I thought it might have been diverticulitis (which I've never been diagnosed with) since I do have diverticula and the pain came on so quickly after eating a lot of onions. I've had the flu before but never that severe. I had excruciating spasms under both rib cages along with the usual N and V. Thanks for your input.

I was diagnosed after a colonoscopy as well and I asked the surgeon who did it if I was going to have to give up my whole grain breads with all the seeds in it and the nuts that I like. He said that idea has been disproven and that I should even eat more of them if I want. WHEW!!!

For anyone who has these issues, just make sure you hydrate because diarrhea and vomiting can cause one to lose vital fluids. I occasionally have GERD so severe that after drinking red wine I throw up. I hydrate with Liquid IV, which is a powder I can put right into my iced water.

You're absolutely right! While in the hospital, I had an IV of fluid, due to my severe dehydration and one of antibiotics. After 2 1/2 days they sent me home.
