Has anyone here updated their cell phone lately?

My old phone was giving me a few problems. My son decided to give me one of his as he had 3. Well, he came last evening to help me update all of my apps.
I felt like the village idiot as he was updating and asking me if I understood what he was explaining. I was having great difficulty grasping the details. It took
almost 2 hours to do the deed but I am still at a loss as I don't know what happened to all of my photos. Is it just me or does anyone else have this problem.? I had my old phone for 7 years and this new one is too complicated.

I guess it depends on the phone that you have, @oscash . I have an iphone and just did the latest iOS update last night and it only took a few minutes.
If what your son did affected your apps and your photos, then I think that he must have been doing something different than just a regular OS update , like most phones have every so often.

If your old phone was seven years old, then the new one probably does a lot more things, as well as operating differently than the old one did.
It might take a while to get used to it.

My suggestion is to write down what kind and model of phone you have now, go to youtube and search for tutorials on how this phone works.
After watching a few reviews and tutorials, the new phone should make a lot more sense, and you will probably soon love it even more than the old phone.

You should be able to update your photos, go to your provider website, password and update from icloud. It's easy if you have an apple phone.
If it is an android go to the store, they will help you there.

I had to get a new phone because of the upgrade to 5G. My 4 G phone wouldn't connect to the network anymore.

I don't put apps on my phone because they slow my phone down and I get hounded all the time by notifications and alerts that my apps need some kind of attention I don't care about.

In fact, there's not an app that I was ever glad I had on my phone other than messaging.

Also, why is it so important to companies that I download their app? They must be gaining access to information they're not legally allowed to access from your simply being on the internet.

I understand, I'm a techi-dunce as well really, more so with my iphone than with my computer. I go to youtube for tutorials...

I like to drive things into the dirt, and phones are no exception. Even then I tend to buy on value for my money, biasing me toward products away from the flagship phones or a bit below the middle of the pack.

However I have been eyeing the new "flip" folding smartphones a while, especially those new Razr products from Motorola. The current one seems almost there but I hope the next generation improves the hinge, folding display, and functionality each one more notch.

Love the idea of a pocketable phone again, and the outside second display looks pretty versatile.

Use "You Tube University", my son and I call it. You should be able to find videos on YT that explain what you need to know about your phone's operations. Every time you get a new device, there will be a learning curve. Don't be ashamed to ask you son questions if YT doesn't have answers for you. It would definitely be overwhelming to try remember everything all at once.

Regarding your photos, do you have a back up app? For instance, when I take photos with my phone, they go int my Google Photo app (part of my Gmail account) and stay there until I delete them. So that no matter what device I'm using, I can always access my photos. If you're an Amazon Prime member, I believe they have the same feature. I'm a Prime member, but have never used it because I don't need to. Plus I imagine if one cancels the Prime membership, access to the photos would be lost.

Replaced my Android phone with a 'refurbished' iPhone recently as I was attempting to 'de-Google.' It works very similarly to the old phone. The heaviest use it gets is walk route planning and following. Photos go automatically into my iCloud account.

I've heard several people complain about the visibilty of their photos in an earlier, but recent, iphone update, but I think they have changed it back now to how it used to be. It's frustrating dealing with all the change. As is said, "Don't fix something that ain't broke."
Hang in there!

Still with my Cingular flip phone , have no idea how to text nor what apps are and do not care one iota .

If I had one, which I don't, I would throw it away! I have many good things I do, I will never sacrifice any of that time to talk on a cell phone...what a total waste of time...

I know, I know...most of you could not live without your cell phone! Well, I think if you REALLY think this through, you may find I am correct! How much time do you lose every day because of your phone? Think about it...life is short, use it wisely.

This reminded me of the song by Bob Dylan called "Serve Somebody". "It may be the devil, or it may be the Lord, but your gonna have to serve somebody". Everyone makes his or her choice. :)
