Have you ever been pulled over by a cop - if so what were you doing?

Had just been to a square dance.... I guess I was still unconsciously doing some of the moves ("weave the ring" if you're a square dancer) when the blue lights came on behind me. Apparently I was weaving slightly. Lesson learned: disconnect from previous activity before getting behind the wheel!

Twice. Once I was driving to work early in the morning in the 70s and was pulled over by a cop and informed my headlight was out. I thanked him and told him I was not aware, and that day my husband changed out the light on the vehicle.

The second time was when I bought a new Subaru in the early 80s, and was driving from a martial arts class right after it became dark. I was pulled over because I only had my parking lights on, not my headlights. I apologized explaining that I was still getting familiar with the new car functions, and I thought my lights were on. It was on a small side street with no traffic, so it was not a real issue. I adjusted the headlight knob, and went on my way.

I have never received a ticket in all my years of driving, but I do admit there have been times I made mistakes or was over the speed limit.

I've had a half dozen speeding tickets over my 60+ years of driving....my last one was probably about 10 years ago. I was into drag racing in my younger years, and I guess I developed a "lead foot".

Only twice in 52 years of driving.
When I was around 20, I was driving through a canyon & a cop pulled me over for speeding. I was going around 10-15 miles over the speed limit. I pleaded guilty because I was & paid a fine.

When I was around 40, I was stopped at a red light. There was a freeway off ramp on my right. An ambulance was stopped at the bottom of the ramp with no lights or siren. When the light turned green, I started to go. When I got halfway through the intersection, the lights & siren on the ambulance came on. Since I didn't want to block the intersection by stopping, I continued through & pulled over to the right & stopped to let him pass. A cop who was behind the ambulance stopped me & said I didn't yield the right-of-way to an emergency vehicle. I didn't want to argue with the idiot, so I went to traffic school so the ticket wouldn't raise my insurance.

5 times in a car and once on a bicycle.

Car
  • Following too closely on a freeway - Got a ticket went to traffic school
  • Turning without a left turn signal - I am sure my left signal was on because I'm a stickler for using turn signals. I told the officer I was absolutely sure my turn signal had been on, he had me check my turn signals (which worked) and then let me off.
  • 3 times speeding - Let off once, paid once and ticket another time that I went to traffic school for
Bicycle

I was pulled over for running a red light at a left turn signal.

I wrote about it here: https://www.seniorforums.com/thread...olations-in-your-lifetime.53108/#post-1496382

Once for speeding and another time when I was helping a turtle across a busy street.
I saw the turtle trying to cross the street and I knew he would never make it unless I helped him. I stopped dead in the middle of the road, got out of the car and tried to pick him up.
I didn't realize it was a snapper and he turned on me. I has no idea they could move so fast. I jumped in the car and grabbed my moms pocketbook who was with me at the time and used it for protection. He grabbed onto the pocket book and I dragged him across the street. Mission accomplished.
I didn't realize it at the time but there was a cop behind me who watched the whole thing.
Once I got back in the car and drove a few feet he pulled me over and told me he could have given me a ticket for holding up traffic.
I really wanted to ask him why the heck didn't he get out and help me but I kept my mouth shut.
He acted like he was doing me a big favor for not giving me a ticket.
All my mother was worried about was the hole in her pocketbook. Not a good day.

No. Knock on wood. It’s not that I haven’t pushed the pedal down too hard, just wasn’t noticed when I was doing it.

Once about 15 years ago for speeding in a school zone. I felt bad about that. I was just in a hurray to get home, not paying attention at all. That's what I told the cop, too, and I didn't get a ticket. I've only gotten one ticket and it was for letting a parking meter run out.

You were very lucky. Over here they have cameras on all of the school zones and you can get an automatic license suspension of 3 months. No arguments entered into.

Once by an officer who told me one of my tail lights was out. Once when I was driving real slow in a residential neighborhood looking for an address -- the officer just asked me if I was OK. It must have been a slow night for him. Once by a state trooper in the Texas panhandle when I was admittedly speeding, but there wasn't anybody out there except for me and that trooper and maybe a couple jackrabbits for miles. I swear those Texas state troopers can hide behind a tumbleweed or a Burma Shave sign! He just gave me a warning and told me to cool it. And once by the Polizei when we were stationed in Germany. I don't remember why, but I remember it took me forever to find my USAREUR drivers' license. He just looked at at he license and told me to be on my way.

I forgot this one:
My girlfriend & I were driving to Las Vegas at night. We had another 80 miles to go & I was bored. I was going around 85 & a Highway Patrol officer stopped us. As we were stopping, my girlfriend said, "I know how to get out of a ticket; just agree with everything I say to him."
After I gave him my license, he said, "I clocked you at 85."
My girlfriend said, "Oh, officer....we're going to Las Vegas to get married; please don't give us a ticket; it will ruin our wedding."
The cop asked me, "Are you really going to marry her?"
I said, "Yes."
He handed my license back to me & said, "You're already in enough trouble. Keep it under 70."
I couldn't believe he fell for that.
And, he must have been psychic.

All in my late teens through late twenties:
Once for not yielding to a pedestrian in a crosswalk (went to traffic school).
Once, several years later, for making a left turn out of a parking lot. I didn't see the sign that said No Left Turn. (Traffic school again.)
I was also pulled over five or six other times for minor violations, but got verbal warnings, no write-ups or tickets.

I haven't been pulled over since I was about 30.

Speeding once, out late and breathalised twice but luckily I was the designated driver on each occasion, so had only had the permitted one pint, oh and once for overtaking when the white lines were against me, (not too bad in almost fifty years of driving ;).

This happened many years ago, but I've never forgotten it. My friend is a vegetarian, and she had a bumper sticker on her car that read, "Love animals, don't eat them". We were headed to her house one evening when we noticed a patrol car behind us. They followed us all through town, but made no attempt to pull us over. We parked in her driveway and the cruiser stopped at the end of the driveway and 2 police officers got out. We were an absolute wreck by then, imagining all sorts of infractions we might have committed.

The officers walked up to us and asked us where we got the bumper sticker. It seems that they had a colleague who was an avid hunter, and they thought it would be hilarious to plaster his car with the "Love animals" bumper sticker. That was my one experience with being "pulled over" by the police...
