I just heard from someone today that I haven't seen in years. We lost touch about 10 yrs ago. She invited me and my Husband to dinner. I told her that I was sorry but we had a lot going on now and we couldn't get together now. She sounded disappointed.
I wanted to tell her the real reason, but I didn't want to go through all that stuff from the past. Years ago she invited us to dinner. When we got there she told me she was upset because she didn't know how to cook. She asked if I would mind cooking something for dinner. I felt sorry for her so stupid me started cooking something for her. Then she tells me another couple is coming to dinner also. I asked her how long would it be until they arrived. She said we had a few hours. We were invited to be there at 5pm and the other couple were told to come at 7pm. When the couple arrived she asked my husband to make them drinks. Finally when we sat down to eat the other couple said they were happy to meet us and that they had wanted to meet my husband for a long time. So we were really only invited so that the other couple would come. After dinner the other couple left and the woman that invited us told me she had pain in her arm and could I help clean up. So I helped (really) I did the clean up.
Did she really think I would accept another invitation from her. Maybe she needed someone to clean her house, or wash her clothes. Fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me.

I’d be sorely tempted to ask her if she’d taken any cooking classes, and if that pain in her arm was as uncomfortable as the pain in my hind end that developed about the same time frame,
of which became chronic and it’s coming on as we speak

Good grief, that's incredible! Hindsight is always easy, of course, but probably as soon as she asked you to cook dinner, you should have politely excused yourselves and gone home.

Looking back I should have, but I am a dummy at times. Thinking about it now I remember her Husband walked in the kitchen when I was loading the dishwasher and he said" Make sure you load the dishwasher right." So I said "You can probably do it better." Then I walked out of the kitchen and me and my Husband went home.

She really took advantage of your good nature and so did her husband, glad you declined the invite this time, they both sound like users. I've been taken advantage of over the years, but not anymore, lessons learned.

jeez Sassy...''Make sure you load the dishes right''... I would have broken the first dish over his head!!!..what a damn nerve !!

In answer to your question yes I've been taken advantage of many , many times.. I find it too hard to say No to people, although as I get older I'm learning..

Many years ago, a colleague asked me if I could have a look at his car as he was having trouble with the hand brake. I said OK and went to his house and he showed me the car and promptly disappeared back inside. It didn't take to long to find the problem, so I pointed out what was wrong and he wanted to know why I hadn't fixed it. Simple, I didn't have the tools or the parts, so he would have to take it to a repair shop to get the work done. He was not happy.

Later in work, he was heard to say that he never did anything for himself because there was always someone who would do it for him.. Of course, after that nobody would help him...

And now the punch line....

Not long after this he died unexpectedly of a heart attack (in his mid 50's) and his body was barely cold before his widow re-married. It turned out that she had been having an affair for years. Obviously, that was another bit of 'work' that somebody had been doing for him!

When I was in the Army, 1957, I let a ‘buddy’ borrow $75 bucks. I made less than $100 a month, so this was a huge sum for me. Long story short, he didn’t tell me he was being shipped out next day. That’s the last I saw of him and my $75 bucks.
