Have You Ever Cheated Death

Never insert your hand into a place you can't see. i was clearing a house to be sold. Fumbling around in a dark closet, a shotgun fell and went off. The barrel was pointed at the space between my waist and my elbow. A close call. Blew a big hole in the opposite wall.

And near drownings.

1988 - Esperance Western Australia.
Recently arrived from Tasmania. Inexperienced swimming in the ocean as Tasmanian waters were too cold for me.
I was the only person at this beach at the time.
I jumped into the Southern Ocean at Twilight Beach. Leaving my dog to watch over my belongings.
Before I knew what had happened, I was hundreds of metres offshore.
My dog was a mere speck on the distant beach.
I was taken out by a strong riptide and being without experience I tried swimming back in.
Very quickly wore myself out as I was not fit. Continued to try swimming back in until I had no more strength and simply gave up.
Stopped trying to swim, saying to myself, "I am about to die"
When I stopped swimming, I was swept out laterally then back to shore. Staggering onto the inviting dry sand.
My dog was all over me. Barking and licking.
I lay there exhausted for many, many minutes, then a face appeared above me.
It was a female police officer. She asked if I was the one swept out to sea to which I replied yes.
Apparently someone in the top carpark had seen the whole event and rang the police.
She asked if I was okay and I assured her I was.
As I arrived at the top of the cliff, a reporter interviewed me about my experience.

Have You Ever Cheated Death

Eating meals south of the border and mainland China, come to mind in regard to 'cheating' death

Now, close calls, that's a bit different

Gonna say rounds whizzing past my skull is closer than I care to ever get again

I have (however) cheated death by doing stupid things
too many times to list

Probably a few times, but the one that was most dramatic was at age 17 losing control on an icy bridge and passing between two oncoming cars, on two wheels I was told, going off the road, doing about a 50 ft jump based on tracks, and getting safely slowed to a stop by small trees. Just lost a muffler and dented a fender. I was not hurt at all, just almost scared to death.

As a young man, I had a few serious near misses - truly lucked out of potentially major accidents.

At a church picnic, at age 14, I went over a waterfall and was stuck in muck with water rushing by at neck level. NO ONE made an attempt to reach me in my panicked state. Finally I managed to get downstream and walk out. That finished me with the church people whom I had known for years.

But the most serious was when I was on a friends cabin cruiser on the DesPlaines River (Joliet, Ill). I was about 28, and was a bit under the influence. I was relaxing on the top deck and a hand reached up and pulled me down over the side. I was floundering but knew enough to keep me afloat in the moving water. Finally a guy on the boat (James Withrow) jumped in and helped me back. That ended me with my "friend" who it turns out was angry with me.

To this day, the memory of this incident scares the heck out of me.

Attempted murder! Wow!

Yes, there were three occasions. The one below was one of them.

At age three, I was leaning out a 5th floor apartment window trying to get a better view of the distant elevated subway train as it clattered by. Below me was the 5th Avenue, NYC Manhattan sidewalk pavement. Well, as the elevated train passed by again, I carelessly leaned out too far, and found myself gradually sliding out the window head-first.

Frantically, I tried to prevent it by flailing my little legs, but the slow sliding continued. Soon, my head was aiming straight down as my belly scraped against windowsill and my legs were finally tilted upwards. Unfortunately, even though I desperately wanted to scream for help to the adults in that small room who seemed strangely oblivious to my plight, I found myself voiceless from fear. Why couldn't they see me? All I was hearing from a few feet away was their enthusiastic conversation about other things.

Then, just as I had finally lost all hope, and was waiting for the plunge and that horrible impact, I suddenly, felt my lower body gradually and seemingly magically tilting me back up. Well, once safely back inside, I slumped on the floor with my back to that terrible window in shock. I sat in silence gazing at the adults in that small room who still seemed totally unaware of what had just happened. After all, there they all had been, just few feet away still enthusiastically engaged in their conversations with a perfectly clear view of the window, yet still seemingly totally oblivious to the potential tragedy that had just almost occurred right under their noses.

In any case, I have always attributed that very narrow escape from what seemed to be certain death to a divine intervention. Why when others are permitted to die? Only God knows.

Most such events occurred as a young adult. I survived by mere chance and learned lessons. And most involved frustratingly driving vehicles on highways unwisely impatiently. Most common example shared with many others is making quick lane changes on busy freeways after only viewing rear view mirrors, without adequately turning my head around to view adjacent freeway traffic lanes only to find some vehicle in a blind spot.

Note over decades I've never caused any vehicle accidents except for one recent minor slow speed bump pulling out of a driveway into a blocked view street.

Driving in a Large City, ya are very cautious at main street stop lights even when they say green. Those are Run Very Red lights
roads cause in a hurry drivers always run them long lights. Gubbermint workers ! More often than not they turn off in less N a mile.

Why were you risking your life by driving in that way?

I guess that everytime you hop on a motorcycle you are tempting fate.
In NZ south of Kaikoura there's a couple of one way tunnels, from memory they're about 100 metres long. As a young hooligan I crossed the white line and went through the wrong way.

Friends of that kind can definitely inflict a lot of harm because our guard is down based on trust. I had my best friend hurl a bottle at me from his tenth floor apartment window. Three stitches on my scalp and almost went bald due to scalp nerve trauma. Another good "friend" almost paralyzed me by attempting to break my lower and upper back. Still suffering the painful effects from the damage inflicted. Same as you! Caught me totally by surprise.

Reminds me of this:

You are a remarkably poor chooser of 'friends'!

That definitely had to be terrifying. How far out were you swept?

Jumped in a quarry lake when I was young, couldn't swim, some kid pulled me out.

Fell thru a hay shute in a barn, woman tried to grab my legs but upended me and I smacked face first onto concrete. Drove my teeth thru my lower lip, two black eyes, concussion, I don't remember it happening.

Rolled a car on the hill right in front of Jeffery Dahmers childhood home right about the time he killed his first victim. I wasn't hurt but what if he invited me in to use the phone?

Skidding logs out of the woods one dug in and turn end over end and smashed down on the tractor, fortunately saw it coming so was able to slide to the side off the seat, it smashed the seat and bent the steering wheel.

Had a brush hog mower tip up and over onto the tractor I was pulling it with, again saw it coming, it initially trapped me but I was able to work my way out.

Had a ladder slide out as I stepped off onto a second story roof, I hit the ground with my legs thru the ladder and the aluminum ladder actually broke. Man that hurt.

Had a road rager stick a gun in my face when I was on a bicycle ride. Truly no reason for it, I was well to the right of the lane and no other cars on the road, he was just a very angry man.

There's more close calls I could list but I need to get outside and get some work done, but I plan on being very careful.
