Have you ever had milk toast?

My bread wasn't toasted, so I can't say I've had milk toast, but I did have milk bread, I guess. My gramma used to make it for me as a snack. She'd tear up a slice of plain bread and drop all the bits into a glass of milk. Sometimes she'd sprinkle a little cinnamon on top.

When I came down with a cold, a bronchitis or upper chest infection, Dairy foods would automatically be off the menu. I was told I'd throw up and sometimes I did. I then knew sickness was upon me 😂.

I'd get toast soldiers, a few days later, you know starve a cold, feed a fever tune...with tomato juice with a pinch of S&P.

One favourite treat that's similar to yours @Grampa Don was a slice of bread sunk into a bowl of hot and fresh chicken broth. A slurpee it was called and it was wonderful to eat. Usually given with orange or tomato juice, before or after.

Vitamins C and the benefits of chicken nutrients. Bang on combination.

I gave the same to my munchkins and their sickness didn't last more than a week. Job done!

It's been a while since I had this. Good for when you don't feel well enough to eat but you're hungry and good for warming up on a cold UP morning and just plain good any old time! Thick rusk in the bottom of a bowl with hot milk poured over it. The rusk soaks up the milk. When DH and I would go up North, we'd lay in a supply. We'd pay a whopping $.79 bag. Like I said, it's been a while!

ETA: I'm not from Trenary. Trenary Toast is sold everywhere in the UP.

I have heard of it but never had it, my mama always gave us toast and hot tea when we were sick as I recall. I have eaten cornbread and milk though, kinda tasty.

Trenary Toast isn't like a slice of toasted bread. It's cut in thicker slices and toasted all the way through. Rusk.

My mom gave me tea and toast for an upset tummy or a hangover. :)
Hangover cure (I never needed it, but Papa gave it to sibling), a slice of deli/cold cut ham/gammon and a small glass of flat beer. I guess it worked as sibling would feel better.

I did suffer once early 2000s but it was right after drinking brown coloured rum. To the loo I went Speedy Gonzales style and my guts came out. Suffered a three days migraine afterwards. Toss the offending liquid into the sink and recycled the bottle.

Haven't touched it since. Also Papa always pointed out that to stay away from hangovers was to never mix spirits. Example, you began drinking clear spirits, such as vodka, then you stuck to that. And above all else drink in moderation!

The days of hangovers are long gone.... 🌸

I've not heard anyone mention milk toast in years. Yes it was one of my moms cures to what ever was ailing me. She would sprinkle it with cinnamon and sugar, it was like eating dessert. I loved it!

My whole life. My favorite snack. Toast with a melted bunch of butter/margarine sprinkled with cinnamon/sugar. AND cold glass of Nestles Chocolate milk. ( cold. ) A nice bite of bread and quick mouth full of c. milk...mix it around and it is heavenly. :)
