Have you ever locked yourself out of your home or car?

Yes I have to say I’ve locked myself out of my car ...once it would have been a good 20 years ago and luckily I wasn’t far from home ....it was when I lived in the suburbs of Adelaide, and there was warnings about traveling alone with your handbag on the passenger seat ,as undesirables were taking advantage of women traveling alone by opening your passenger door when you were stopped at traffic lights and stealing your handbag ,so I got into, the habit of putting my bag in the boot of my car while traveling without my husband ..,one day I unlocked the boot put my bag in ..and the shopping shut the boot only to,discover I’d dropped the keys, while putting the groceries down ....the car was unlocked but being an older car it didn’t have a latch in the car to,pop the boot of the car ...and I didn’t have a mobile phone then ,so I asked the nearby deli to phone my hubby to bring the spare keys ,he had a motor bike so he came on that ,i me never locked myself out of my home .and we don’t get snow ..Ive never had the issue you had AC

I’ve never even seen snow, I’d have to travel about 1000km from where I live to see it in winter .

I locked myself out of my house years ago; had to call a locksmith to let me in.

I now keep a well-hidden key in my courtyard and always do a mental checklist before I shut doors behind me.

Many times, which is why I kept a back window of the house unlocked and a handy chair nearby so that I could climb in. For the Morris Minor soft top I would leave the boot unlocked, and climb in by pushing the back seats forward.

Of course that was years ago when I was agile.

I hate locking anything. As far as I am concerned the burglars and car thieves are not inconvenienced but I am when I lock myself out.

I don't remember how it happened but I locked myself out of the house, too. I dragged my then husband's extension ladder onto the patio and almost killed myself putting it up- it wobbled so much. I'm also afraid of heights.

I climbed up to the roof of the addition (cape style house), crawled up the roof then climbed into my son's upstairs bedroom window.

Years ago before work while it was still dark in the morning I used to go out for a jog with my dog. There's two doors in front, the outside screen/glass security door, and a wooden one behind it, that we never lock normally. Well although I had the key to the outer door, in my rush and fumbling in the dark with the dog, I accidentally turned the inside knob just enough to lock the wood door.

After my run, it was still dark and my husband was sleeping inside with the air conditioner on in the bedroom, he didn't leave for work until later. I rang the bell, but he never heard it. I was in a rush now to take a quick shower and get dressed and leave for work, so I started stressing. I tied the dog to the front door, and climbed over the 6' privacy fence to get into the back yard. Once there I started knocking on the bedroom window to wake my husband.

He wasn't responding, so I was banging harder, then in a loud but quiet way since it was still very early, I started to call his name too, with my face by the window. Finally he got startled out of his sleep and had no idea what all the banging was or what was going on. He let me in the back door and I let the dog in through the front. Then rushed to get ready and leave for work, I don't ever like to be late, I'm always early to be sure. But it turned out okay.

I've done both. After getting locked out of my house a neighbor broke a small pane of glass in the back door stuck his hand in and opened it. It only cost to replace the glass.

I've had car lock outs more often, especially back in the day when you could wiggle a coat hanger around the window and open the door that way. I did this twice when I was a college student. It now costs so much if you lock yourself out of your car that I carry three car keys at all times. One in my handbag, one in my gymbag and one on my person. I have AAA also. But opening the car door with the coat hanger used to save me money. Pity they changed that. :eek:nthego:

Never locked myself out of the house, but I've locked myself out of the car several times; once while it was running. Had to wait almost an hour for the roadside service guy to get there because I was way up in the hills. And I still haven't had a duplicate key made. Keep forgetting. :p

My insurance includes roadside service, and they vend with locksmith companies. Think it costs me $20 annually, which isn't bad. I'll bet AAA offers it, and probably for no more than that, maybe less even. You should check it out.

After a day at the beach last summer I returned home to find I had lost my keys, unthinkable for me as I’m always very careful and know where everything is, I was hot, bothered, covered in sun oil and sand and had to walk to the Agents Office for a duplicate, then go and get new keys cut and return the duplicate to the office

It turned out the keys had slipped out of my bag while I was buying my newspaper that morning and I got them back the next day, didn’t think of that at the time as I panicked, I was just relieved it wasn’t a Sunday when the office would’ve been closed

Both, the car was silly, I laid the key in the boot/trunk
and the wind blew the lid shut!

The house was stupid, I changed jackets and didn't
check for keys. So since then I always close the door
with the key in the lock and I pull the door with the
key, then I know that I have it with me.

Those instances were in the 80s.

Mike.

Yes,over the 29 yrs I've lived in my apt,I've locked myself out once. I was in a such a hurry one day,I forgot my keys. When I returned,I had to buzz my next door neighbor to let me in,then use her phone to call the apt office.
One other time,I was using a new purse, remembered I had put the keys in one of the pockets. I could feel the keys, but do you think I could find the pocket? NO!!! It was embarrassing when I had to call the apt office again. Sue

I've not done it for a few years but I've locked myself out of the house two or three times while mowing the yard.....come in for a drink and lock the door on the way back outside.

Knowing how I am I had a key already hidden in the backyard in a pill bottle and still do.

House, yes, often. Car, no.

When I lived in a stand-alone house, I kept a key hidden inside one of those fake rocks in the garden. Now, my hi-rise doesn't offer any such place. So I've had to be more creative. I've hidden several keys in various spots, probably the most practical one being the one I gave my next-door neighbor to hold for me.

Yes i have, twice in the last ten years,..luckily i had a bathroom window open on both occasions, so got a friend to use their ladder ,to enter through the window,..i am very aware now,...so it wont happen again,...i hope, lol.

My car came equipped with OnStar. It always knows where my car is (By satellite.)

If I lock myself out of the car, I call a # (I keep in my wallet) and OnStar UNlocks my car door.

Not recently. I used to lock myself out of my old Nissan Altima but it's not that easy with my new car. Ive never locked myself out of my house in Fresno because I always come in through the garage with the opener.

Do have a set of keys to the house in my purse in case the power goes out and I can't open the garage door. I never take those keys out of my purse so chances are slim that I'll not have them on me.

Ive lived here 14 years and never locked myself out.

The times Ive locked myself out of my old car, someone always helped me open it...usually with a hanger.

I was supposed to move into my new home in early November. But it wasn't until Dec 31 that I got the keys. I turned on the furnace and the place got warm. It was 20 degrees F outside. At 12 AM, I was in sox, jeans and a tee, when I dashed outside to throw some trash away. I locked myself out. I was able to get into my car and got the tire iron. I was freezing to death. So I tried to smash a window to get in. It was that plastic/glass kind. I beat on that window for an hour before I was able to get my hand inside. I was so surprised none of my neighbors ever called the cops???

It's worth it for me @ $19/month. If my car is ever stolen (Or highjacked), OnStar may aid in its recovery.

Its your business of course what you do and you're right $19 a month isn't a lot but it's still not worth it for me. If my car is stolen (have NEVER had that happen in 50 years) my insurance should cover it.

Also I'd rather spend $19 a month on subscriptions to Netflix, Acorn, BBC etc.

I use to hide my keys in one of those lights that you stick in the ground. The light's base was big enough to slip the key in. I thought it was a good idea until I locked myself out and had to use it. When I went to get it and opened it a swarm of ants came and was all over my arms. I could not stand it. So now it is hidden in a pill bottle in a safe place where ant hopefully will not be a problem'
