Have you ever taken a DNA test?

No, I have no ties to what and who my ancestors may have been. It doesn't have any bearing on who I am or what I may contribute in my own time on this earth. When I am gone, it won't affect my offspring, whether I lived as a princess or a bar maid.

I have often asked others what difference it made if they were of Italian descent or Viking. I didn't get a substantial answer.

I will keep my DNA to myself, personal choice.

My father was very secretive about his childhood and family, and the story he told got changed least once.

Then a few years ago, an acquaintance mentioned that I was part Mohawk. I said no. She said my brother had told her that. For various reasons my brother's relationship with our father was very different from mine.

I asked my brother about it, and he said our father had said something about maybe a Mohawk ancestor.

I couldn't care less about being part this or that. As others have said, it has nothing to do with my life today. But there was a time when people cared about race and illegitimacy and so on. I think the secrets were harmful. So knowing about the lies and secrets in my background might help some. It might help explain why my father was the way he was.

My sister did 23 and Me. I’m predominantly English and German, which I always knew. But they also found a little Irish and even French…mon dieu!

My daughter did 23 & Me and Ancestry in order to compare... and I did 23 & Me. Between the two, 23 & Me turned out to be much more accurate according to what we'd already uncovered with 20+ years of genealogy research... but it went further and answered some questions as well as pinpointing the exact towns in Germany we already knew our ancestors were from. Neither of us allowed the information to be shared and both of the places honored those wishes... I know the DNA is still "out there" and always will be, but it's not being plastered around for 15th cousins to come knocking.

23 and Me. I found a cousin I didn't know I had. I found I am 59% German, 28% British, and the rest is a mix of mostly northern European/scandinavian with a touch of Spanish and Native American. Fun to know! I also found out that I have more Neanderthal DNA than 91% of 23 and Me clients LOL.

Did one with Ancestry. So did Dave. His results were a bit of a surprise, but mine were not. Kind of fun to know your real ancestry as opposed to family lore.
