By some specific date, either a Real ID or passport will be required for ANY flight, even within the USA.
It might be good to get one when it's convenient, just in case, someone needs to fly someplace they hadn't planned far ahead or at all.
I myself, plan to get a Real ID, on a State ID card, which is an option. Rather than on my driver license.
One or the other, (not on both) your driver license OR a state ID, gets the special indication status.
It's your choice which one to get marked as "Real. "
You can keep your regular driver license, and renew it plain too,
and get the Real marking put on a plain State ID (At the motor vehicle, as well)
which i plan to do, so that at some point, if i don't have a driver license, the ID would still get me on any plane, or to drive or be driven as a passenger, across the borders, if i ever needed to.
The State ID being "Real" is also a good thing to get, for anyone who doesn't drive, and does not have any driver license.
I plan to keep my regular driver license, but give the documentation for a State ID card, instead.
Then, i wouldn't have extra stress, at some later point, in any possible unseen situation in the future.
I am sharing this with all of you, just in case someone else thinks it's a good idea for them. Not needed by anyone with a still valid passport. That is a good option also.
But the Real ID designation, there's No reason it must be on your driver license. And you might not always keep the driving one, but could always renew and use, a State ID card.
