Have You Got Your Real ID yet?

My license is up for renewal, so I may opt for one as there are advantages to it. I just hope that it isn't a major hassle or wait at the center to get one.

About 6 or 7 years ago I had to jump through a whole bunch of extra hoops such as showing them my birth certificate to renew my license.
I don't know, maybe that was it. I also have a US Passport. That should be enough ID.

There's a star on my DL so I guess I do.

I got mine a few years ago, the DL w/star. ... didn't know anything about the 'REAL ID' program until I looked at my driver license a while back when they mentioned it on the news. .... I already had it, and didn't know.

When I renewed my DL a few years ago I had to provide all the documents required by the Real ID law. However I don't have any of those markings on my license that show that it is a Real ID. I think each state has to be certified as a Real ID state, and that probably hadn't happened yet in Hawaii. I'm up for renewal in 2021. I have no need to have it renewed before that. If I find the need to fly between islands then that will be another story.

In my state, you have to go to the DMV with several documents proving that you are who you say you are. (Passport, social security card, etc.) If you make an appointment in advance, they guarantee that the wait is only 15 minutes maximum, otherwise you can sit there for several hours until they call your number. I did make an appointment, and it was pretty painless.

Don't have my real ID license yet but I did finally get my passport and the passport card this year so I could cruise. NJ is trailing as far as issuing these licenses from what I understand, but will meet the Oct 2020 deadline. Thank you for posting this informative article which answered all the questions I had about this change.

By some specific date, either a Real ID or passport will be required for ANY flight, even within the USA.

It might be good to get one when it's convenient, just in case, someone needs to fly someplace they hadn't planned far ahead or at all.

I myself, plan to get a Real ID, on a State ID card, which is an option. Rather than on my driver license.
One or the other, (not on both) your driver license OR a state ID, gets the special indication status.
It's your choice which one to get marked as "Real. "

You can keep your regular driver license, and renew it plain too,
and get the Real marking put on a plain State ID (At the motor vehicle, as well)
which i plan to do, so that at some point, if i don't have a driver license, the ID would still get me on any plane, or to drive or be driven as a passenger, across the borders, if i ever needed to.

The State ID being "Real" is also a good thing to get, for anyone who doesn't drive, and does not have any driver license.

I plan to keep my regular driver license, but give the documentation for a State ID card, instead.
Then, i wouldn't have extra stress, at some later point, in any possible unseen situation in the future.

I am sharing this with all of you, just in case someone else thinks it's a good idea for them. Not needed by anyone with a still valid passport. That is a good option also.

But the Real ID designation, there's No reason it must be on your driver license. And you might not always keep the driving one, but could always renew and use, a State ID card.

My be a Texas thing!!
Yes, Might be a Texas thing.
OR, you might have shown them all required documents in person sometime in the past, and they know that?
Which you may have forgotten or you might have done it sometime while sleepwalking?:sleep::)

Or, you might be allowed to keep your regular, plain driver license, and only if you choose, you'd need to go in, IF you ever might drive across the border, Or take any plane?

For someone to continue to drive legally within their own State, only, they have no need for any Real ID or Real driver license. Fpr now, anyway. Perhaps more activities in the future, might require one.
