Sees weird to me that such a strict conservative state would be so lax. There must be something else to it. There is no way in Hawaii that one is allowed to renew a Dl by online or by mail.

I forgot that. Yes, the letter is true.
That would be courthouses...um... IRS Offices? Post Office? I dont remember. I have gone into my sleepwalking mode, apparently.

I did wonder if you have actually tried to DO it online yet, @Ken N Tx
The letter might be very general, and when you get online,
it might stop you at some point, during the online process to say you must go in.
That happens, if they require some other thing at any certain age, such as some States require an eye exam or other testing. So you possibly would get only part way through, then be told in your case, you cannot finish or complete it without going in. It's possible.

We have had online renewals for years now....We renewed my wife's last year..I still have 2 years left on my DL and the letter states I have until Oct 2020 to renew..

We have too, but not for the Real ID indication. And not for some other exceptions, as well.

My husband went in to renew his drivers lic yesterday but forgot his Social Security card so they told him he can turn it into a REAL Dr Lic in a couple weeks when I go in to renew mine. They've made both us us take a written test even though we both have perfect driving records. They say they select people randomly to take the written test but I think it must be age related.
Thats the only reason I got the letter...It said online or by phone!!
I will try the online later today..
Not lax at all... Texas has SS#, birth certificate info., and everything they need for this purpose on file already from years back.
They don't need to go thru it all a second time when nothing has changed.
So they can renew online for many of us. ... And I plan to renew online next summer.

I was just giving my own info and ideas on it, just in case it helps you or others,
but I did NOT mean at all, to sound pushy, or like I think I am a know-it-all, because i know I do not,
and I hope i didn't sound like one!

Some States DID get extensions.
But my understanding is that, at some point, they will all need to make the new ID's available to people in their States, so the people of that State (all States)
would be able to board planes (any planes, even within the USA)
and enter federal buildings, after some cut-off date.
Which might be Autumn of 2020. Not 100% certain , if any extensions will go beyond that.

Not sure about this, Seabreeze, but I don't think so. My renewed driver's license had the star on it, but it had nothing to do with Real ID. I had to go in separately to get that.
With Real ID, you don't get any paper documents or changes to your license. It's all in their computer.

You still need a driver's license to drive don't you?
I just looked it up to be sure, I think I'm okay in Co. with the star license.

Yes. But if you needed ID, to board a plane or to enter a secured federal building/base, etc, then you WILL need either a passport or a 'new' Real ID, either on your driver license or on a State ID.
A passport would do for all ID purposes but not to drive.
By Oct 2020, without either a passport or a Real ID, you cant board any plane, even within the USA, after that, if you needed to, for travel or for any unexpected emergency trip.
Even a person who does not drive, and doesn't have a driver license, will need either a passport, or to get a Real ID, at the motor vehicle dept.
Otherwise, even a non-driver will not be able to board any commercial plane.

It's really not a big deal. I filled out the form on my laptop and at some point it said, for the Real I.D. go to your local Registry or AAA office if you're a member) to complete the transaction. Brought my birth certificate, existing license, DD214, Soc. Sec. card (non-laminated), had a very brief wait,(less than 10 minutes) due to having filled out the questionnaire by computer and that was that. License now has the "star' and the word "Veteran". Same price - no hassle!

So if you're going to get a driver's license anyway, why not get the Real ID?
I was only referring to any place that requires an ID. The passport is gold in those instances because you would have had to present your birth certificate, two pictures and social security card to obtain it. My license is due in a few months and I will get the real ID.
