Have You Had To Turn Your Heat On Yet?

not the big heater, but I turned on a small heater briefly this morning to warm up the bathroom and the toilet seat  ... now the window is open and the cooler air is coming in. great time of the year... chilly in the AM but high of 65 today and lots of sun. :)

Probably won't use heat until late November, perhaps later. My house has two central HVAC units. One serves the main areas of the house, the other is for the bedrooms. Since only the master bedroom is being used, vents to the other BRs are shut off.

We still use the AC sometimes at night (78 degrees or hotter). When we turn on the heat it kicks on at 65 or colder in the bedroom.
Main areas of the house, AC is at 80 and heat at 64.

However, neither HVAC unit (BR or main) stays activated 24 hours a day. We kick them on when we need them. Our desert climate could easily kick on automatically set AC in the afternoon and heat at night. That's why we manually activate and deactivate the units. Also draw in outside air with fans, then close up the house when outside temps rise in the late mornings.

Most of my So Cal friends do the same thing; it's a pretty common strategy.

We're having temps in the 70's today, thanks to Beta - one of the storms coming across the Gulf. It's very nice and cool for a change.
The cloudy, rainy weather makes it a little dreary though, but I'll take it.

In early September, we nearly turned it on a couple of mornings. It felt too early. Things warmed backed up & we had to open the windows wide to cool off. Then the smoke came & windows were closed and we moved the air with furnace fan. Rain & furnace will be coming soon and staying on for for several months.

We had an improperly forecasted 29 F Saturday morning. It wasn't supposed to dip below 35 or so. They said there was a frost advisory so we covered what little is left in the garden, basically some winter squash and tomatoes, a few peppers. I got the furnace ready, changed the filters, set the thermostat, cleaned all the vents and checked for blockages. It's run each night since.

Naw, it's still getting up into the 90s here; cooling off not too bad at night but the smoke from all the fires gets better for a few days & then is bad again (especially today, can't remember what a blue sky looks like). They're saying that around here, the air quality is not going to be in the healthy range probably 'till the end of the year, sigh.

Yes, once when it hit 48. Was freezing. But when it’s over 50, no. Just more blankets and sweaters. Last night it was 55, today it’s 84. Our weather is always crazy.

The landlord controls the heat which is included in my rent.

I saw a notice posted in the entry hall that indicated they would be testing the system this week. When they turn on the live steam for the first time each year it can be an adventure. We all wait the hear the first rumbles and hisses then we begin to go from room to room looking for wisps of steam and feel for leaks. If we are lucky the packing in the pipes swells to seal the small leaks and a gentle but firm rap on the relief valves stops the hissing if not we call the office and wait for someone to come and make repairs.

Can you control the heat for your individual apartment? I've never had steam heat -- well maybe in Germany -- we had radiators that you had to turn on individually. Back east I visited a friend who had steam heat and it sometimes made the most godawful clanging noise.

It's still pretty warm here; 80s and 90. It's been getting down fairly low at night here and week before last I turned on the heat at night a couple of times because I was freezing. I'm still using the swamp cooler part of the daytime, though.

Nope!

I keep the windows open all winter.

Well, it is 48 F outside this morning here and for the first time this season I've turned the heat on. I don't have a new furnace filter (I have ordered one from Ebay but won't arrive this week yet). I also put the fan on low for that smell you get when you first turn it on. There was such a chill in here and I had put on warmer pjs and a velvet robe...still was chilled so on I turned the furnace.

Ahh, that infamous smell of dust heating up and being blown into your home. The best solution is to get an annual HVAC maintenance contract where they will conduct an annual inspection, change your filters as needed and clean your entire ductwork once a year depending on your situation. One caveat, watch them change the filters. Here is a video of how proper duct cleaning is accomplished. The Home Depot DIY programs. Even if you are not into DIY projects sometimes it's just good common sense to know exactly what is being done in your most expensive possession, your home.

I hope this helped.

Our temps have been in the mid 40s here too a few times. I did turn the furnace on a few times. Then it warmed up again. Weather here is always crazy.

We are in the forties past midnight and into mid morning. Then we get up into the high 60s, low 70s. So no, we haven't turned on the heat. Our house is well insulated and when I get up around 7, it's about 68 in here, so very comfortable.

Well, it is mid September. The seasons are changing. Yup, I'm one with the 48 degrees outside. So my furnace has been working for about two weeks. I have a wind up , pendulum wall clock in the kitchen. It's hung on an outside wall. Even though my indoor temp is 72, when it gets cold the clock slows down a tiny bit. I have to readjust it.

I leave my furnace thermostat set at 65F (18C). It's been running off and on for the past several days. And to think I was sweltering just 2 weeks ago. Seems every year we go from air conditioning to an electric blanket in a few days. Frost warnings the last 3 nights here.
