Have your alcohol drinking habits changed over the years?

On a recent visit to my Doc's, he asked if I drank. I said, no. He asked again, like he didn't believe me. I'm not anti-alcohol, or anything, but I just don't drink anymore. I have a bottle of Champaigne, year 2000, that I've never opened. In my younger days, I was well on my way to becoming a non-sober bar rat. I even had my own bar seat, like on "Cheers". And yes, I slept with my head on the bar.

Oh, yes. My family owned bars in town and I would frequent them every chance I got. After work, on weekends, and sometimes during the week with work associates. Then it was on to the dance clubs.

But, as the years have past and I have gotten older and medication has been introduced in to my life...my drinking habits have changed considerably. I did have 2 small glasses of champagne w/family over the holidays, that was fun. Other than that, I can't even remember the last time I drank. In fact, I've got a bottle of Belveder vodka in my freezer that's prob been in there for 3 yrs! I've moved on to other things now...and I don't have a hangover in the morning. ;)

Things do change. I used to love my rum and coke and when I was younger (and more stupid), I admit to having a few too many on occasion.

However, come today, I have lost my taste for any booze. I have 6 bottles of wine that are sitting around here and I don't know what to do with them. These days I have a rum and coke about 1 glass every 3 weeks. You know it just doesn't taste good anymore!

It might be my age (78) or it might be my medication but you know things change and I have no more interest in any kind of booze. Maybe it's for the better. I haven't had a hang-over for years and that's OK too.

Years ago, when I was stationed in Germany, I got "attached" to that stout German beer. I consumed quite a bit. When I returned to the States, I tried some Coors and Budweiser, but it was nowhere near as good, so I seldom drank any. I kept some wine or flavored vodka in the house, but only drank sparingly. I think the last time I got "drunk" was at a party we had at our house back in the 1970's....and then, I drank so much that I wound up in the back yard "upchucking". I still keep a bottle of chocolate flavored vodka in the cabinet, but only take a sip if I'm having trouble sleeping. I've pretty much given up on alcohol.

Oh my, yes indeed my drinking habits have changed. Alcohol was never a problem for me, but I certainly imbibed much more in my free-wheeling, pre-children, twenties than now.

I might have one or two drinks a month these days. Typically beer, occasionally wine or champagne, and almost never a mixed drink, though they were my preference back in my wild and woolly days.

Back in my Navy days while on shore leave I often drank too much, and so did my ship mates. That pretty much ended when I returned to civilian life, but I often drank a beer while dining out, and at home I began dinner with a small glass of Pinot Noire, believing it to be healthy. Then, as time passed, thru reading and doctor advice, I came to realize that alcohol was literally poisonous. Today I wouldn’t so much as touch a glass of beer and my Pinot Noire is down the drain.

Chocolate Vodka. Oh god thoughts of heaven. Poured liberally over ice cream.....................have straw as well as spoon handy. 😁

I drank a lot in my youth. Stopped drinking completely when I was having and raising my kids. After I left my ex and started dancing, I felt so liberated, practically weightless, and would often have a glass of wine in the evening, usually when I was out dancing. 🄰

More recently, Ron and I enjoy a cocktail several evenings a week. I’ve become an amateur mixologist and we have a modest bar at home where I experiment making up new and interesting mixed drinks. I’ve also introduced the particularly fun ones to friends and family who now request them when we get together.

I used to drink beer when younger but quit drinking anything when taken some medication that doesn't mix with alcohol. A doctor asked me about drinking and I told him I did when younger but quit. He suggested I was an alcoholic that is why I quit. I really wondered about him.

I started experimenting with alcohol when I was about 12. I remember we used to sneak onto the golf course of a private country club and buy beer from an honor box cooler. šŸ˜‰šŸ¤šŸ˜‚

Back then the drinking age was 18 and going out drinking was pretty much our only recreation.

In high school it was keg parties in corn fields or at the lake, later it was local bars.

When I started working, I took the bus and quite often killed time waiting for the bus in a little inexpensive side street saloon with other commuters.

As my work responsibilities increased so did my expense account drinking and entertaining, killing time in airport bars, taking my employees out for beer and pizza, etc…

When I stopped working in 2005 my drinking gradually dropped off to nothing.

I’m not against drinking, I have to watch my excess carbs and calories.

At this point in my life I would rather have a dish of ice cream than a cocktail.

I had fun and thankfully nobody got hurt but it was a great waste on so many levels.

Two questions
A) How is Ron doing?
B) Would you be so kind to share a favorite concoction or two?

Two years ago in March of 2022 I fell and broke my left ankle. While I was in the hospital I was diagnosed with very low hemoglobin, which resulted in my needing a number of transfusions of both whole blood and plasma. I was in hospital and then physical rehab for 11 weeks in total. I haven't had a drink since the day I broke my ankle. JIM.
