I think it all depends on where you live. In San Diego, the evening TV news was full of it.

Where I live, we have a multifaith chapel, where every year on MLK day, they have a memorial service for him. The choir sings gospel songs. It's very well-attended.

I don't visit this forum on a "regular" basis and wasn't online on Dr. King's birthday so just seeing this thread today.
