Having my first experience with furosemide (diaretic)

Was having some symptoms (sudden shortness of breath) that showed up on X-ray as possible small amount of fluid in bottom of lungs, & Dr put me on furosemide (generic “lasix) and a potassium supplement. Took first doses this morning, supposed to take it twice a day. I hope that having to go to the bathroom every 45 minutes slows down after a while. I understand some people take it regularly, continually, and wonder how it acts after a while. Thanks for any comments.

My preemies were on lasix. All of them developed side effect which are rare. One had kidney stones, one had gallstones, and one had blood in his urine. The kidney stone guy was 2 when they were removed during a 6 hour operation. The gallstone guy was 10 when his gallblader was removed. The blood guy had the children's hospital ER thinking we had abused him. All 3 times, my husband came to the rescue. No doctor ever even thought of those side effects.

While the kids were in the NICU, we went across the street to the Harvard Medical Center bookstore and read about the drugs they were one. My husband remembered the lasix stuff, and had to literally fight with the doctors to get the kids checked out.

So, remembering this is rare, keep in mind that if you have bladder or gallbladder pain, to ask about the Lasix.

I have been taking it for 20+ years ..... every once-in-a-while I get a light headed feeling ..... seriously maybe every few years. But , if sit down, drink 'extra' ? water it's not bad at all.

Yes I am an hourly pee-er , ya get used to it . And if I have to go somewhere [inconvenient] I just skip the furosemide for the day.

Thanks WheatenLover. What a nightmare that must have been. My gall bladder is long gone I. Hoping this doesn’t have to be a long term thing.

The reason that medication is better known as lasix, is due to the fact that it lasts, six hours. It doesn't seem that way with me, however. It can also cause irritable bladder, which caused me to cut my dosage in half.
