Hearing "things".

I know my hearing is 73 years old, as us the rest of me. Can't hear my wife when she speaks in her soft voice, certainly can't hear well in public when the ambient noise miss to loud. And I've got tintinitus, runs in the family.
But I hear a rumbling sound in the AM. (Wife doesn't hear it, she says.) I turned everything I could think of off. Not the AC, nor the AC fan. Not the ceiling fans, or bathroom fans. Cycled them on/off. Not the 'fridge, no vibration on the door. Puzzling.

Happens that today the electricians are installing our whole house generator so the power comp has switched off all our power. I still hear the rumble. That means its a neighbor (?!!) or my ears. I'm going for a neighbor's AC unit at the moment.

Maybe it’s a Florida thing as I also can hear a very low rumbling sound early in the morning. I wonder if they are building a secret tunnel or something?

But as low as Florida is to sea level, I wouldn’t think that’s possible.

I worked at KSC for 50+ years. SpaceX it is not. As to tunnels the Florida ridge ( we are north-central, Marion County) is known for tunnels in some places, hoping that's not the case. Think sinkholes.
Sure sounds like a diesel engine idling. Nearest construction is a quarter mile off.

I have heard & read that there are those that do hear a low pitch 'rumble' / droning sound continuously . I looked into it when I heard it for ..... maybe a year. AFAIK , no known cause or medical condition. My turn at it was about 2-3 years back. Haven't heard it since ....... don't miss it either.

Of course there are those dubious reports of it being aliens , covert gov activities, etc.....:) But those folks are just those folks. Might as well have some fun with it.

Maybe the evil eastern empire has commissioned a direct connection tunnel to tap Washington DC telephone cables and missed by the difference between meters and yards.[emoji3166]

When our hearing goes, it's the higher pitched sounds which go first. Hence women's voices are more difficult to hear, but you can still hear the lower pitched sounds. Is the rumble associated with vibration? If so, it could be a washing machine. I live in a block of flats and often hear and feel other people's washing machines operating during the night.

All sound is associated with [caused by] vibration/friction ...... is it not?

I have bad tinnitus & when my environment is quiet, I hear a loud low-pitch rumble like a generator and also several high-pitch sounds.

My tintanitus sounds like cicidas. This rumble sounds like a large disel engine some distance away. There's no vibration associated with it that I can sense.
If I guess I'd say it's a badly run pump of some sort. To the east of us is a "single-wide" city with their own water system. The installation is on their west property line side and they regularly have problems. I'll check out that rumbling URL.

The Taos Hum ref in the article RadishRose posted about is well known here in NM, no answers yet.
Many years ago I had a very severe inner ear infection, the kind that for a while can't even lift your head off the bed without everything spinning wildly or vomiting. I was left with a sound in L ear that sounds like birds chirping. Luckily it doesn't interfere with hearing anything else.

There is no vibration that you can feel.....but all sound is caused by vibration.

Interesting read. Strange that they seem to single out the U.S. and the U.K...?

And if I read the general consensus correctly? ......... It is simply in our heads.

I do not remember where just now ..... but I did read once that some docs believe that it [tinnitus] etc. Is a warning sign of trouble [in] the head? I asked my doc [doctor better get you to a specialist]....he said well many folks have that...........such a profound answer........

I'm not sure if I have tinnitus or not. I sometimes in the quiet of night have a quiet but high-pitched sound but mostly not. I can't figured that out. And sometimes with my ear on my pillow at night, I hear a low rumbling sound of a heavy type of vehicle on the road, but when lift my head up, it's not there.

Sounds like maybe ear wax hardened in one or two ears and then it crackles. That has happened to me several times and then eventually goes away.

Funny, I never hear those sounds of which you speak. My hearing is not 100% since
I've grown older, but I don't need a hearing aid...........yet.
You are the most cognitive old person I’ve ever known .
I can’t believe you’re 95.
