Heavy furniture for old farts

Our entire home is getting new flooring. We have to remove everything off the floor everywhere, but they will be shifting our furniture around. This is a huge task - like moving. Every single room as overly heavy items. Think armoires, entertainment centers, oak & L-shaped desks, oak bookshelves, workout room, etc. So as a senior, have you ever just gotten rid of heavy items in lieu of finding lighter, simpler items? We use it all but I've culled a lot. Dejunking is liberating! Have you rethought furniture as an older person? Or am I just panicking and it'll be fine when the floor is in. All I can think of is why do I have so much heavy and complicated furniture, And never am I doing this again!

I sold, gave away or donated all my antique heavy oak furniture when I sold my house 15 years ago and moved in with the Spousal Equivalent.

If I had my way, everything in the house would be inflatable....
I always wanted everything on rollers. I love to rearrange, but can't because it's all too heavy and that is depressing.

We have not had an entertainment center in20+ years. What are you storing in it? What TV are you using.
We have a flat screen tv, the shelves are on each side that house a dvd player (we watch dvds), a bluetooth amplifier for speaker, radio, music, tv sound, two speakers and dvds in the cabinet. My dh said yesterday that once we move it back we won't have to move it again. My thoughts were there goes rearranging - again and continual dusting.

We just gave away our old loveseat and my husband’s recliner and got a set of small, cheap recliners from Amazon. They are easy to move if necessary, large enough for what we need, and comfortable. It seems like we have more room in the house now, too.
The new chairs have a vibration unit , so we can relax and get a back massage at the same time, and they were just over $100 each from Amazon.

Real wood furniture is heavy. Sometimes rather ornate. Usually good quality.

Particle board is heavy too and doesn’t hold up.

Jmo, get rid of half of your present furniture if you still like it.
I'd like to get rid of one armoire that houses (hides) a tv in the kitchen my dh wants. One bookshelf and small oak writing desk (heavy!). That would be extremely helpful. My good quality stuff isn't ornate per se, but it is excellent quality. Having particle board isn't really what I want and I'm thinking if I purchased other items, they'd be poor quality just due to the era. I don't want cheap. So maybe just pare down. Our house is too big for us, but it's paid for, taxes are CHEAP and we're on land, so I worry about room sparseness. Although having said that, the flooring is costing a bundle!

We have a steel built leather love seat. Ugly. Uncomfortable. A couple chairs is what I would purchase instead. I need space to make it easier to vacuum and I despise loveseats and couches in front of a window. This is a great option.

I have been putting off having mine done for the very same reason, too much heavy furniture. Good luck.
It took me two years to come to terms with it. Seriously. And I've had sleepless nights... it's horrible. Like moving. I waited so long, my old carpet is a trip hazard and my linoleum is ... well... Not fun. Even choosing the product. The money. Not fun. But now I just want it done and over with.

You will have to take up the kitchen armoire with DH. A bookshelf and a small desk should not be too difficult to dispose off. Check what is available in your are - churches, Ark, neighbors.

I do not understand your brining up particle board. There are plenty of good furniture available. The company who made our sofa/recliner in Cali reupholstered all car stools with the same leather. It took 12 weeks but was well worth the wait and the expense.

Building material and labor has gone up over the last four years or so. I can tell you what a geo thermal and a water heater ran in 2025 or replacing tub with shower. Ouch!

Yvonne there's no way we'd be able to get chairs like that here for £100..each...not a chance...

the next time each item can be moved for you, get the furnsiture sliders put under each corner...

you can buy them in various sizes, and for different flooring , but this is generally what the look like..

I have them unde almost all of my furniture and it means I can move them eaily by myself...

I have this every time I change the flooring... The major flooring company here, will only move 5 items of furniture in any one room... given that I have 2 sofas..or did... now I have a sofa and an armchair... a sideboard... a tv unit... a set of drawers... .. a stand alone cupboard.. 2 heavy side tables..lamps..... they have to be moved somewhere each time.. and as there is no space in my foyer they have to move all the furniture to one end of the room, , lay the flooring, and move it all back.. and lay the second..

The most major problem arises in the bedrooms.. and although I have built in closets, and the only furniture in the rooms are bed and bedside cabinets.. the rooms are small.. the beds can't be moved from one side to the other, and they're too heavy to move out of the rooms...

What I had to do was each time I wanted new carpet or new bed.. I would change the other at the same time....so get rid of the bed, lay the new carpets and then have a new bed installed

A few months ago. just before Christmas I bought an expensive made to my specifications.. new bed.. but this time because all the carpets are in excellent condition in the bedrooms, there was no need to change them... and so if I stay in this house then that new bed , and those carpets will see me out... and will never need to be changed
