Held to a higher standard?

Do you think some, professionals, elected officials, those in the public eye as sports stars, or in positions of power/authority as in religious order positions, should be held to a higher standard? Judged more severely?
Expected to perform their lives as role models or 'like Caesars wife'?

I do. The average working Joe or Joan might behave less morally than say a teacher would.. I think.
The average volunteer for partisan political party work hasn't made those election promises, sworn to uphold the obligations to serve the public and isn't in a position of power or authority.
A Rent-A- Cop doesn't have the professional training that a law enforcement official does. nor perhaps the choices of truncheon-spray or Taser -weapons nor usually self defense physical training.

A Priest, Clergyman/woman,Boy Scout Leader, Teacher, etc. must serve morally and ethically in my opinion.

Then there's lawyers

Should and could are pretty much miles apart.

I agree that they should be held to higher standards, but when I look around I see that it will never happen.

You want to know something very scary, there are armed security guards who are allowed to carry that require minimal background checks, some even having had past criminal involvement and are out shooting and in some cased killing people in astonishing numbers? I only bright this one up because I saw this on tv just the past week, it was featured, I think of one of the main networks or cnn. Talk about people who should be held to a higher standard and aren't. Rent a cop armed and quite dangerous. These aren't the real officers, nothing to do with real law enforcement whatsoever. But, yes there are professions where some should be held to higher standards, especially when dealing with the general public, be it armed guards or clergy, teachers and the like.

The average Joe or Joan, must be as moral and ethical as they expect a clergyman/woman, boy scout leader or teacher to be.

Nope, disagree unless we all have the same standards, but if you accept a job, leadership position, you are given a set of standards to perform by, theres is a written code of conduct in place and you agreed to perform to those standards. If I accept a job position, than those standards are what I should expect to uphold. Now should and would are a whole nother animal.

Setting personal moral ethical standards are more fluid to some degree.

Must Be ?
Not in my assessment. A boy scout leader(type) is in a position of trust with minors. A used car salesman has only his conscience and the law to govern his sales.

A cop swears to uphold the law, while a bookie or bootlegger or smuggler or prostitute does nothing of the sort so I expect far more morally and ethically from a cop-clergy-teacher-or boy scout leader.

Yet bookies, prostitutes et al. are at least honest with themselves about what they do - they aren't putting on a cloak of respectability, only to have it lifted to expose the nasty underbelly like the others ...

Hmmm, Bill Clinton could probably get elected again today so it seems that at least sexual morality is pretty much out the window in our estimation, just a private matter as so many attest to...

Dat true. Your valid point simply attests to the electorates fickleness, partisanship and willingness to ignore deceit.
