Live crickets. If they ate mice I wouldn't keep them, I am phobic where rats and mice are concerned. Not logical of course as I can handle a gerbil! If I could handle mice I would have a snake as well, which I also like. However, I have shares in the python owned by two of my grandsons. They brought it to show me when they first had it a couple of years ago, and I put it around my neck like a necklace, it made a good photo!:)
I don't keep big spiders but occasionally I share my house with some huntsmans, a common species where I live.

This is Emily. She feeds herself.

Welcome back to the forum, @bluecheese50. I do remember you from before also. I think that you went by "Justme" when you were here before.
I remember about the Glitter stones and you had even posted a picture of one of them. They are unusual and pretty.

Yes 'Just Me' is one of my many usernames, I had forgotten about it.

What is a typical lifespan for a tarantula in captivity?

Supposedly 15 years if they are female. However if they are male much shorter. Mine have never lasted too long, so I suspect I have been sold male spiders instead of female, I wouldn't know the difference.

I was pretty fed up when I bought the last one a few months ago, which I ordered on-line, and it arrived in the mail. It is a small spiderling and not the full grown one I expected. Still it seems to be ok at present.

Fascinating. I've just been looking up sexing of tarantulas and apparently it isn't an easy thing to do prior to maturity of the males.

Well it doesn't really matter, it is no big deal, I can always buy another one when the spider goes to spider 'heaven'. I don't get sentimental about spiders, or any other animals for that matter. Not that they should ever be mistreated, of course.

Bluecheese50, Welcome! I just joined this month also. Still figuring it out but starting to get the hang of it. I've been on a couple other Senior Boards, but they are gone now. Worse part of that is you become attached to so many like family than they are taken from us. Last few years I mostly did Facebook because of family & distance. Hope to hear from you more. I've been all over Ohio with my hubby on business before he retired, we were in Fort Wayne, Indiana at the time.

Hi, I have posted on many forums over the years and made some Internet friends, which was a BIG MISTAKE! I won't bore you with the details but suffice to say I am older and wiser now. I post on forums these days just as a displacement activity.
