Here is an interesting tree in our forest. The Honey Locust

Wow! Looks dangerous, and is. Those thorns can go through your boots soul, and even a tractor tire. They make seed pods that have a honey like pulp in them, that is edible, also.

We had a job clearing a local farmers fields of these beasts. What a chore. The smaller ones would fall on my back. I had to crawl to get it off me and not without scratches either. Isn't nature full of surprises.

These are native to Central Texas and along coastal areas. It's surprising, but some people like having them. Not me.

I've got 2 of them in my byard. I've never noticed the thorns you're talking about, but I do have those pods all over the ground from one of them. Apparently, only the female tree has pods.
