Hezbollah pagers(not cell phones) explode after an apparent Israeli hack

If they are hackable with firmware that could make them explode that's scary because sooner or later criminal hackers will do it for crime.

I remember listening to a lecture years ago that mentioned that was already a serious concern (though I think the focus was not on regular criminals but on China and computer chips), and I think the lecture had an example of the US gov't taking control of a machine in another country in some similar way.

It's hard to believe that the amount of energy in a pager would deliver much more than a puff of smoke.
Perhaps the Mossad was able to make and arrange for the wide spread distribution of a type of pager that has a small explosive charge hidden inside of it ? Lebanon has many corner store type of outlets that sell such things.

In the past Mossad was able to kill some target individuals in Europe by supplying them with explosive cell phones, which had a tracking feature, and a kill feature. Holding a cell phone to your head, which explodes on receiving a coded signal, is a very concentrated and focused way to take out terrorist operators. This type of wide spread operation in Lebanon is ingenious, in 2 ways. It kills or wounds a very large number of an opposition terrorist group, and it makes the survivors stop using the devices immediately, further hampering their communications abilities. A net win for the IDF. JIMB.

They also get to identify potential Hezbollah soldiers. Probably plenty of intelligence operatives taking lots of pictures along with noting where if someone is receiving aid.

I didn't realize it a person can get banks of pagers for business. I still thinking old school with a large lighter size pager with one or two pen light batteries in it but these banks are rechargeable and rechargeable batteries burn a little better although they probably need help ie pre planted with explosives or a circuit to trigger the batteries.

Adding 30 grams of Semtex explosive to a belt worn pager would not increase it's apparent weight to a user. 100 grams of Semtex is enough to blast through the trunk of a tree that is a meter in diameter, so 30 grams would be enough to kill somebody, for sure. The news reports suggest that many persons were injured by blast effects, but only a few were killed outright. To me that indicates that many of the pagers were not being physically worn, but were in close proximity to the users at the time of the mass detonation strike being initiated by IDF . JIMB.

Well I don't find it funny that Israel or anyone would blow up somebody when they do not know collateral damage. What if that man at the fruit/veggie stand was next to a baby? That's not funny at all. That's dirty pool! And I also noticed that people (on here and other places) have opinions on who the bad guy always is without knowing the truth. The news says it's A, so you believe it. If you do not have first hand experience it's best not to hedge an opinion or insult a race of people because of what CNN or BBC, or CBC or anyone else says.

I had enough experience in far away lands fighting battles where we were outright lied to or given false info, yes on purpose!

I have no skin in this game between Hez and Israel, but I do not want innocent people injured for the lies of either side.

Israel lied when they said Hez broke through the wall of the most secured border/country in the world, and very easily as well. Not one major news agency or govt questioned that. And if you or I do, we are conspiracy theorists. Israel are clearly liars, and perpetrated this 'attack' so that they can have an excuse to attack Gaza/Hezbollah.

Hez are cowards and prey on fear and have no qualms injuring innocent people. Don't get me wrong I am not supporting either one. But where does all this violence stop? Neither side is right or good. Both are wrong.

Here's what ChatGPT gave me:

The recent reports of Hezbollah's pagers exploding after being hacked involve two possible mechanisms. One theory is that malware was introduced into the devices, which caused the batteries to overheat and explode. These pagers were powered by lithium batteries, which can ignite or explode when they overheat due to electrical issues, such as a power surge triggered by hacking the firmware.
Another possibility is a more direct physical attack: the pagers may have been tampered with before delivery, and small explosive charges were inserted. These were then remotely triggered, possibly using signals sent to the devices. Given the coordinated nature of the explosions and their intensity, some experts believe this scenario points to an operation by Israeli intelligence, such as Mossad, which has been linked to similar sophisticated attacks

Reports today from Lebanon say about 2500 people were injured by exploding pager devices, yesterday. To me this indicates a "long game strategy " by Mossad, to make, plant in circulation, and then detonate these devices, all at the same time. JIMB.

That's where they messed up. Wonder if they thought those Hezbollah would be in meetings or training sessions. They have enough intel to know who from and where they are getting the pagers yet they don't know when all of them will be away from civilians.

But this also shows how embedded they are with the civilian population. These aren't soldiers as one unit on the front lines. Part of their strategy is trying to hide in or use civilians for cover.

Hopefully some Hezbollah didn't try to make side money and sell them on the blackmarket.

Breaking news. The pagers were made in Budapest, Hungary, by a company called BAC Consulting, under license from a company in Taiwan, called Gold Appolo. The model is the AR 924 pager, sold in the middle east under the Gold Appolo brand name, for the past 3 years. BAC consulting may be a Mossad front organization. link.

Anybody who purchased one of those pagers should be offered a full refund.

The company in Hungary denies making them, but that company is connected somehow to a firm in Taiwan. It sounds like the Hungary outfit doesn't even own a factory.

Thousands of walkie-talkies, solar panels and fingerprint recognition devices used by Hezbollah fighters have detonated across Lebanon, killing 14 and wounding hundreds of people including mourners at a funeral, witnesses and security sources have reported.

The second wave of carnage comes a day after thousands of exploding pagers used by the group left almost 3,000 people injured and a dozen dead, including civilians and children.

Security sources have now confirmed that hand-held radios were purchased by Hezbollah five months ago, at around the same time as the compromised pagers. Lebanese media has also reported that home solar energy systems have blown up in several areas of Beirut.

The attacks amount to the biggest security breach in Hezbollah's history, with the group and its backers Iran condemning Israel and labelling it 'mass murder'.

Apparently the Budapest Company did make them under a licence deal..

The US, meanwhile, was forced to deny for the second time in two days any involvement in the detonations.

The White House's national security adviser John Kirby told reporters today: 'We were not involved in yesterday’s incidents or today’s in any way.

'We want to see the war end, and everything we’ve been doing since the beginning has been designed to prevent the conflict from escalating.'

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned this afternoon that the strikes could be a precursor to a large-scale confrontation between Israel and Lebanon.

'The logic of making all these devices explode is to do it as a pre-emptive strike before a major military operation,' he said.

'These events confirm that there is a serious risk of a dramatic escalation in Lebanon and everything must be done to avoid that escalation.'
