Historic Korean Meeting

Kim Jung Un Turn Around What's caused it

I can't find any commentary on what has caused him to do a 360. His present willingness is so unlike his past actions and comments. VERY STRANGE. The world is pleased of course but some of us are wary of the next shoe dropping.

I think it mostly has to do with an improved relationship with SKorea starting with their invitation to NKorea to attend the Olympics hosted by SKorea (held in SKorea). I believe Kim Jong Un's sister sat right behind the VP Mike Pence and his wife to view the opening ceremony, in fact.

I think there have been negotiation talks between north and south (specifics being kept secret) BUT SKorea is quick to say that even though NKorea has made promises, whether they keep those promises is yet to be seen. The whole world, including SKorea is skeptical because history proves that NKorea doesn't keep their promises.

There have been negotiations that also included the US. I also head Rocket Man's missile site is broken down/deteriorating.

I'm choosing to be optimistic, at least for now.

IMO Kim Jong-un is being used by the Chinese to create this new friendship with S. Korea and the United States as part of a long-range effort to reduce our military presence on the Korean Peninsula.

We'll see!

Simple. He CAN'T do any more nuclear testing for the time being due to the collapse; e.g., cave-in, of the current underground testing site North Korea uses. So his offer of 'suspending tests' is genuine, but it has nothing to do with any desire to compromise on NK's nuclear program.

Kim gets an enormous lift of legitimacy from Trump agreeing to meet with him. This was the major reason why no other president has been willing to meet with the NK regime head. We are technically still at war with NK. He will give up nothing to Trump; there will be a huge propaganda boost of photos of him shaking hands and smiling with Trump; and then he goes home where they are already setting up a new nuclear weapons testing site, and resumes bomb testing.

For Kim it's a win-win-win situation.

As R/R said......."I'm choosing to be optimistic, at least for now."

But I do remember from history class & my parents, that there were diplomats from Japan in secretary Stinson's office , when they attacked Pearl Harbor...

That's right, I remember hearing that too. Dang.

That is likely correct. Almost all Japanese officials were desperately trying to prevent a war that they knew they couldn't win. Roosevelt forced them into war through his embargo on scrap metal and oil, critical materials for their industrial economy which they lacked. Former President Herbert Hoover wrote a brilliant exposition of Roosevelt's actions to foment war.

Remember what Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto said after the attack.........

I fear we have awakened a sleeping giant, and filled it with a "deep" resolve...I believe was the known quote?

Yamamoto was educated here...I think he knew it was logistically the wrong thing to do. I believe many of the others [not educated here] were fueled by their arrogance & belief of their superiority.

On our side?....I believe there is plenty of blame to go around as to who knew what & when , and what they could have done to prevent it...stop it?

War makes billionaires from millionaires , and millionaires of entrepreneurs...A lesson learned by the "Great War" WWI....As such many saw a need to keep the money flowing.....jus'sayin.

I wonder if this could have anything at all to do with the US dropping out of the TPP?

Just a random thought. So far no one has mentioned it, so I guess not. Understanding the TPP is above my pay grade.

I'm sorry, rgp. I usually try to avoid abbreviations/acronyms.

Trans-Pacific Partnership

A trade agreement between various countries along the Pacific Ocean. I remember some arguing the trade deal might reduce dependence on Chinese trade, and bring the signers closer to the United States
.

I don't know if that's true or not.

I'm not sure.

I was basing my comment on Kim Jong-un's recent visit to meet with Xi Jinping. My feeling is that Xi Jinping may have given Kim Jong-un a little Dutch uncle advice about how to handle the United States in ways that will benefit N. Korea financially and take the spotlight off of other things that are happening in that corner of the world. Now that Xi Jinping has a job for life I think that he will continue to quietly push to expand China's power along its borders and in the region. One step in that direction would be to reduce tension on the Korean Penninsula and create a false sense of security that could result in a reduction of US military in S. Korea.

Keep in mind that these are just my own thoughts and ramblings. I really have no clue about what is actually happening but the fact that no missiles are flying in the area is definitely a good thing!

It will be interesting to see what happens.
