Hives!

I started getting a few hives on my arms yesterday and now it's spreading everywhere! All I can think of is I suddenly got allergic to DayQuil which I've been taking 1 day for a cough and sore throat. Nothing else is different...food, soap etc. I sent my hubby out for some Benadryl. Has anyone else goten hives from DayQuil?

Not DayQuil, but I have had them a couple of times. It layed me out. They'd go from my head all the way down to my feet and back up and so on. It lasted for about 24 hours. Along with oral Benadryl, I used the lotion too, and it helped quite a bit. Hope it is over soon for you.

Hi Paco Dennis,
I'm so sorry you had hives, but a word of warning, don't use both Benadryl oral AND the topical, some is absorbed through even intact skin and you can have toxicity. Hydrocortisone cream would be better to use with oral Benadryl.
Hope you feel better!

I've had hives a couple of times - mostly on my back & shoulders. Lasted a few days.
I think it's an allergic reaction?

I get them if I eat strawberries. Been allergic to them all my life. They started on my face and neck, and moved down to my feet with the ones at the top disappearing. I haven't eaten a strawberry since I was six. Don't even know what they taste like. Since you can lose or gain an allergy at any time, I wondered once if I was still allergic. I didn't eat one, but I took a sip of Pepsi from a cup my husband had been drinking from after he ate some strawberry preserves. I broke out in a rash on my wrists and ankles. Probably would have gotten the hives if I had eaten one. 😱

Could it be the Shingles??
I had shingles about 7 years ago, so believe me, if it were shingles I would definitely know! Pain from everything...the softest material touching it, the slightest breeze, the gentlest touch. I wouldn't wish shingles on my worst enemy. No, this is hives (not my first go-round with this). But this is turning into a rather stubborn bout. After being on Benadryl for a couple days many welts are starting to disappear, but new ones keep cropping up in different places. Just can't get rid of it! ā˜¹ļø

That sounds like an awful allergic reaction. Sorry you are suffering with it!
Something I did to soothe mine in the past, was to get some oatmeal bathwater stuff, to soak in. I think the brand was Aveena, and it was nice, helpful stuff.
Didn't cure it, but was lots better than nothing!

I had them once from chigger bites gone wild and I've gotten hives all my life from cold wet situations -- always after sled riding as a child.

Last year I suddenly got an angioedema (swollen lips and nose) from the calcium chloride the dentist shot up through my root canal. They told me at the time that people who get hives are at high risk for them.

Yes, it is an allergic reaction.

I got hives from eggplant, head to toe. And breathing issues followed shortly after. And a trip to the ER. Now, when we go out to eat, I tell the serving staff, if eggplant is on their menu, that I am highly allergic to eggplant and will die if exposed.

They are very careful. I suppose they don’t want a lawsuit or dead body. šŸ˜‚

Thanks. Waiting for hubby to come home with the Benadryl....hurry, please!

Could we have an update on how you are doing?

You'd been on benedryl for a couple of days, a few days ago,

and you still had new welts forming.....
If you aren't better, now, I hope you've contacted a doctor, and are alright.

Both my son and I are allergic to Penicillin. Hives like small balloons. I always keep antihistamines on hand for our hay fever allergies, but do not ever take that med.

I started getting desperate and doubled up on the Benadryl. I think that's doing the trick. I woke up this morning and for the first time in days I didn't immediately go into "scratch" mode. The package directions say 1 or 2 tablets every 4 hours and since I am hesitant about taking medicine at all, I went with 1 pill. Forget that! Two it is! I still have an itch here or there, but hopefully this bout is on it's way out. I was getting so stressed that I think it was making the hives worse.

Did you ever see a doctor? You are fortunate you have not had breathing issues.

Yes, stress can often cause bouts of hives.
Nerve-endings go haywire. And when that gets severe enough, steroids are needed. I know about that all too well.
Especially when swelling affects your throat area.

Thank you for updating us, Caroln!

That is a pretty severe episode, and I would want to be as certain as possible what exactly caused it, in the first place, if possible,
and I would have wanted to check with a doctor, before that lengthy a time, and persisting despite the benedryl,
but I do comprehend all the reasons you did what you did, and I am glad you seem to be improving. I hope that continues to be the case!

Are you all better now?
I'd say the hives are finally done now. Once in awhile I'll have an itch somewhere, but I think it's just a "normal" itch, not another hive reappearing. But it freaks me out when it happens, like "oh no, not again!" Guess it will take awhile to get hives out of my brain! Anyway, thanks to all for your concern and (symbolically) holding my hand through this! :giggle:
