House Majority Whip Steve Scalise is in critical condition in a Washington hospital Tuesday night, and will require additional surgeries after a bullet pierced his hip, injured organs and caused "severe bleeding," according to a statement Wednesday night.

Scalise, a Louisiana Republican, is in MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Northwest D.C., where he has had at least two procedures, and "multiple units of blood transfusion," the hospital said Wednesday night. Scalise was brought to the hospital in "shock," the statement said.

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump visited the hospital Wednesday night, and brought the Scalise family flowers. Wednesday is Trump's 71st birthday.

A gunman shot Scalise, two police officers, a congressional aide and a lobbyist Wednesday morning during a congressional baseball practice in an unprecedented act of violence against lawmakers and their aides. The shooting has left Capitol Hill shocked and nearly frozen. Votes were canceled in the House Wednesday, and the GOP leadership is allowing lawmakers to leave town Thursday afternoon -- one day early.

The FBI identified the alleged gunman as 66-year-old James T. Hogkinson of Illinois. He died after being shot at the scene.

Not much response here, Steve Scalise is the House Majority Whip(a Republican).

-has political overtones,
Personally I'm busy, bludgeoned to death with news coverage on radio and tv along with trying to read news. Throw in internet and/or computer problems posting/commenting is losing out.

That being said Scalise survived but now to get a third surgery-best wishes.

Also keep in mind 5 wounded including the Capitol Police who responded and helped take out the shooter. Kudos.

The shooter had a history of some violent acts including 6 police calls to his residence. And purposely dissolved his business in January. Looks like the Occupy movement might have peaked his political interests and activism.

It was confirmed he asked were those Republicans on the field.

Some are speculating that in the screwed up shooter's mind he was going to enable the impeachment of Trump by eliminating enough Republicans and creating vacant seats that a Democrat would get.

I'm surprised there haven't been more incidents like this with all the political vitriol that's going on. With a total US population of 320 million there has got to be a significant number of psychopaths out there that only need a nudge to put them over the edge.

The FBI estimates that there are between twenty-five and fifty serial killers operating throughout the U.S. at any given time. If there are fifty, then each one is responsible for an average of three murders per year.Oct 24, 2014

But, that's just "dedicated" serial killers, likely thousands more, waiting to go "tilt".

No doubt that politics is a common trigger for making people hostile and mentally ill.

What's puzzling about this shooter is he had a family and business-when I first heard homeless guy I thought he got a hold of pistol and went nuts. But he had a van, computer, cell phone along with his guns, not exactly down and out homeless or drug addict living on the streets. This guy really had it in for his targets with his rage fueling his 66 year old body to travel halfway across the country and live in a van for several months.

Well I'm not trying to make light of the subject, but I think we all here recognize that some older folks have anger issues, however, I nonetheless can't fathom why a person would throw away the entire rest-of-their-life, with acting on such anger.

Sometimes obsession can take over a person's life to the extent that nothing else matters. Add rage, the sky's the limit.

I never thought I would see US citizens of any political party endorse acts of violence against others and cities but yet we seem to very often now. With that nothing is much of a surprise anymore. Just wait until the summer heat gets real hot in some of the high crime cities.

Are there U.S.citizen's endorsing acts of violence?

Yep

"A Nebraska Democratic Party official was removed from his post on Thursday after an audio recording surfaced of him saying he's “glad” House Majority Whip Steve Scalise got shot last week.

Phil Montag, now-former co-chair of the state party’s technology committee, was recorded saying he wishes Scalise, R-La., were “dead.”

The guy who is sitting in the oval office said during his campaign that he could stand on a street corner in NYC and shoot somebody and people would still vote for him. If I remember correctly his adoring minions cheered him on when he bragged about that. How cute was that?

Gabby Gifford was targeted because she is a Democrat. Obviously, there are emotional challenged people on both sides of the isle and no stable leader in sight these troubled days.

Besides, there are more people killed with guns in the US than any other civilized country in the world to some that might look as if US citizens are endorsing acts of violence. We're number one on that list and yet gun control is off the table...period.

I agree pretty much, but with one variance: Regarding the killing with guns, it's the emotional challenged people more so than the actual guns, that is the problem. Here in California, gun control laws are more than adequate, perhaps draconian is a better word.

Background checks- that's the backbone of firearms safety, you don't want just any nutjob going and buying a gun; Lord knows there's places that do allow "any nutjob to buy", and they got pretty of nut jobs wandering the streets.

I agree "it's people killing people" and not the guns themselves. I hear talk about our 'mental health problems' all the time and yet, like you say, any nut job still can walk in and buy a gun. Talking about 'mental health problems' and not doing a damn thing about it is, well, nuts. Very frustrating to say the least. The next time this happens, and we all know it will, we'll talk for a bit about mental health and maybe even some kind of gun control, but we won't do a damn thing. We never do. We're all talk and no action. Perhaps we're all a little nuts. :playful:

There's an awful lot of younger people out there with anger issues too. Anger, fear, and frustration doesn't belong to one age group. There aren't that many shuffle boards in the prison yard. kwim?

"Any nut job" can't just walk in and buy a gun here, either. Background checks, fingerprints, waiting periods, etc. Nut jobs and bad guys usually have other than legal means of procuring their guns.

True. It's really hard to get a gun of any kind where I live too.
