These seniors in a Houston senior care facility were finally rescued today after this picture went viral.......first responders / rescuers are just completely overwhelmed by those needing help..

Poor darlings. I can't help thinking that they might have been better off on their beds but given that drowning was a likely consequence for some, perhaps being gathered together so they could be better watched might have been necessary.
I hope the cat was rescued too.

The reports are that this will probably be worse for Texas than Katrina was for Louisiana. Even when the flood waters go back down, there will be months of work to make homes and businesses in the area livable again.
One article that I read said that the Governor had ordered evacuations; but the mayor of Houston thought it would not be this bad and said people would be safe to stay.
If he had some of these places evacuated beforehand, these poor people should not have had to suffer for hours in waist deep flood water in a nursing home.
We thought at first that this picture must have been faked because it is so hard to imagine that these elderly people were not rescued right away when the flooding started, but apparently, it is true, and thankfully, they are now someplace safe and dry.
I hope that they got the cat, too, Warri.

The nursing home owner had asked for help and it was slow coming. She texted the picture to her daughter in another state. When the picture went viral on the internet, rescue workers arrived forthwith. I cannot imagine they were being neglected. Just too many in need of rescue and where do the responders and volunteers go next.
Been great to see the volunteers and the neighborhoods come together. Refreshing to see neighbor helping neighbor without regard for politics, race, etc.
Wife has been watching hurricane coverage all day. Says she has seen the same lady rescued at least a half dozen times. Wonders why she keeps going back in the water..... :>)

Thanks for posting that, Grumpy, good to know. I feel so bad for Houston, and especially the elderly. This is a tragedy on so many levels, it's overwhelming. So many needing help and in dire conditions, and another 4 days of it. It warms my heart hearing how many volunteers they have.

Three members of the Cajun Navy who went to the Houston area Monday morning to rescue stranded residents pulled a lifeless elderly woman from floodwaters and resuscitated her. Joshua Lincoln of Madisonville, Ricky Berrigan of Lacombe and Donnie Davenport of Pearl River were motoring their flatboat northeast of Houston when they came across 73-year-old Wilma Ellis, floating face down.
"The lady must have been crossing in some current. She floated right to the boat. We jumped out and got her and gave her compressions right there in the water. We were holding her from behind."
After about 15 chest compressions, Ellis began to cough and breathe on her own, Lincoln said. The men pulled her into the boat and used a blanket to help her regain body warmth. She was scared, wet and a little disoriented, Lincoln said. After unsuccessfully searching for anyone who knew Ellis, the men dropped her with a local businessman at a gas station near the corner of Tidwell Road and Parkway Forest Drive.
"We're trying to get an ambulance or helicopter to her," Lincoln said. "I put her medic bracelet out there on social media. I just don't know what else I can do."

I don't know if anyone pointed out that the pic from the nursing home was actually in Dickinson, Texas, in Galveston Co. Not sure if it might be considered to be part of the greater Houston metropolitan area, but is south of Houston. It's an amazing pic and really is shocking! My DD & her hubby live in Houston and they are fine so far. DD was covering for some other doctors, so ended staying at the hospital last night, rather than trying to drive home over flooded roads in the dark. My niece & family live in West Columbia, Texas and had to evacuate for safety. Where I live (west of San Antonio) the effects from Harvey never really arrived...we had less than a half inch of precipitation this weekend.
This was an issue during Katrina in which 35 seniors drowned in a home. Owners skated.

I'm curious as to the history of flooding near that facility. The area is so low it's had to have had some kind of flooding in the past even if it was a few blocks away.
