How did you learn your Multiplication?

We would spend sometimes a full Math class reciting our times tables. Then the Nun would fire a question 10 x 9 and if you got it wrong, one whack of the bamboo stick. I was terrified of that stick and made sure I recited them 'parrot fashion' as it was known in those days. I can still answer correctly, much to the surprise of my 30-year-old granddaughter who still struggles with it.

We memorized them from the text book. In one class, the teacher would walk by the desks and ask a student, "What is 7x6?" The student would say, "42!" Some were easy to figure out immediately like 3 fours are twelve. To this day, I still have them memorized.
