How did you learn your Multiplication?

We would spend sometimes a full Math class reciting our times tables. Then the Nun would fire a question 10 x 9 and if you got it wrong, one whack of the bamboo stick. I was terrified of that stick and made sure I recited them 'parrot fashion' as it was known in those days. I can still answer correctly, much to the surprise of my 30-year-old granddaughter who still struggles with it.

In fourth grade we had time on some days (I don't recall how many) where the teacher would play a record that said a multiplication problem (eight times three or four times seven) and we filled in the answer in a grid we made up on a blank piece of paper. When we were done we corrected the sheets. It really got me fully on board for remembering the answers.
