How do you answer the question "what do you do all day"?

For some reason the question bothers me, it always seems to be asked in a condensending tone. It seems to be the first question asked when someone learns I'm retired or that I retired early. I usually say "I keep myself busy" or "anything I like", both true statements. Part of it is I'm a short story type of guy and have no desire to detail my hour by hour, day by day activities or projects I'm involved in so I kind of deflect the question.

Just wondering how others answer the question.
I'm not retired but people who know me know that I don't go anywhere and do anything ever. I just stay home. I get asked that question a lot. I tell them what I usually do and it's generally followed by "Really? You never go out and do anything?" It's not like I'm missing out on anything. LOL

When Michelle gets home from work and school, it's obvious to her what I've done all day. Either the house is spankin' clean or it isn't, she'll smell either sawdust or something cooking, I either have paint all over my shirt or dirt under my fingernails.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist. (but she always asks anyway)

People don't ask me this often. I classify this type of question with retired people telling me over and over how "busy" they are. The ones asking the question or the ones telling me how "busy" they are are not necessarily worth an answer, IMO!

Yes, it's bothersome. They can't seem to get their heads around how to organise their day, without outside office work.

Firstly, there was something Papa told me, that always brought a smile to my face. "Dear, a man can't afford a good woman, as if you calculate all the jobs women do at home, by making a tally of salaries, then they can't pay their wives..."

"Examples: Bed making, house cleaning, getting clothes laid out... Hotel workers plus valet/butler work. See right first thing in morning, 3 jobs..."

"Then, add breakfast making and you find many more Hospitality jobs... Cook, Baker, Dishwasher, Laundry person, see on and on. If children are in this family, depending on their ages, add to this these... Dresser, educators, time-keeper and very importantly, researchers of answers to a myriad of questions..."

So, I've learned to organise my days with what-have-you situations. Therefore, if someone asks me the question now, I just answer truthfully, I'm busy from dawn till dusk and if I'm writing my stories, that consume the night hours as well. If I've shopping to do on a particular day, there's two hours dedicated to that and when I'm back home, it's back onto the daily to-do list.

Which thankfully, they get bored of my OCD and give up 🤣🤣🤣.

:) Not to seem uncharitable, but sometimes it feels like they're really asking, 'Now that you are retired and no longer productive, how do you justify your existence?"
But the question is probably just small talk, and I answer accordingly: "Not much, hangin' in there."

I've probably been asked the question but not in a manner that annoys me. I also don't normally associate with many, if any folks that I consider "old". Maybe my kids are in that category but they are still "kids" to me.

Younger folks don't seem particularly interested in how I spend my days and as I stated, my wife and I are somewhat loners, rarely stepping outside of family and when we do, it's by ourselves.

My lady's passion is dressmaking, she's just finished what was known as a: "Jump suit." A garment made popular by Yves Saint Laurent at the end of the 50's. There is many a variation as you can see from these examples:

Tomorrow I shall take it to the dry cleaners and get it professionally pressed.
They have a steam press, it will look so much better when it's wrinkle free.
The lady has plenty to occupy her in retirement, especially as I have taken
over much of our catering. I too, am now, at seventy-seven, reluctantly retired. But I won't say
no if the right offer comes along.

I'm sometimes tempted to say something out of frustration. Right now what comes to mind is the dirty joke: "When I woke up it looked so good out that I decided to leave it out all day."
