How do you cope with bad news?

What do you all do to keep sane and in good spirits?
Start the morning off playing with my cats, then check the news on TV while I have a cup of coffee. Check news headlines on the net, read what I feel would be interesting, then check out my forums.

Mostly, manual labor keeps me sane and in good spirits. With all the land we own, there is always something to do outdoors...mowing, trimming, planting, etc. The wildlife visiting is a nice distraction. Greet and feed the feral cats too. Taking an afternoon break, sitting on the back deck with something cold to drink, watching the deer at the salt lick, then back to work once they leave.

Also hike and fish behind our home. And, there's firewood to split and stack for the upcoming winter. Busy doing something all the time!

Daily events are going to happen that I have no control over. How something might impact me I weigh my options, otherwise since I have no way to control whatever it is I don't let it bother me.

I have chosen to filter out what I watch. What do you all do to keep sane and in good spirits?
I try to appreciate what remains but it is hard and sad sometimes. I'd had plants that attracted pollinators and there had been so many different types, and there had been frogs. Then the EPA got taken over by anti-environment forces and legalized poisons that the farmers sprayed by plane and then the only insect that remained was some wasps, so I appreciated them. I tried to console myself on the loss of all the frogs by appreciating the lack of mosquitoes. But, I think now having sold my place will be better because I won't have to constantly be reminded of all the species that were killed off. Here in Chicago I visited the Shedd Aquarium and got to see some living frogs, it felt good.

As far as the political side, I find it very frightening to hear people who won't discuss positions on issues talk hatefully about others, and it feels hopeless because of all the gerrymandering and the purposeful hate mongering, and the encouragement by politicians of name-calling and just generally uncivilized behavior. So I cope sort-of by having set up recurring donations to support institutions I believe in, but otherwise by reminding myself that I am just a tiny powerless person and keep telling myself that even citizens in Russia and China live their lives (but apparently not so well in North Korea). I do try to attend a demonstration occasionally too.

Oh and I made some organizations beneficiaries on my retirement money, so if I don't spend all my money before I die then I'll be continuing the good fight after I'm gone.

... I listen to podcasts several times a day. Reading forums or blogs takes my mind whatever is happening.
That's me too. I like informative/educational podcasts. And sometimes they're timely, newsy, but still a lot easier to listen to than TV news because they include various points of view without any sensationalism or devolving into stupid arguments and labels.

Good for you, Honeynut!
Seeing all the young people protesting for action on gun control today gives me hope!

The violence doesn't affect me personally, so it's not that hard to watch the news regarding those matters. And other than voting, there's not much I can do about anything else. I get the feeling that we're witnessing the beginning of the collapse of society. With all the debt the country has accumulated and now the inflation, plus the huge disparities between the rich and the poor, all the indicators are there for the collapse of our economy.

I feel sorry for young people. We seniors had a pretty good run, but young people are screwed.

I get overwhelmed by all that’s happening in the USA and really the entire planet. Especially the issues of gun violence and homelessness which are such multifaceted problems. I don’t watch any of the national TV news channels. I don’t do Facebook,Instagram, etc. Senior Forums is the only thing I participate in that I guess would be considered social media.

However, I consider voting, at both the local and national level, a privilege and responsibility. So I feel I have to pay some attention to issues. I watch some local news, subscribe to a local paper ,and subscribe to some email newsletters that cover SC issues. Also get some newsletters that cover national issues. I try to check out sources that cover both sides of an issue without hysteria, name calling, and demonizing. I rely a lot on the fact checking website PolitiFact as I feel it does a good job of being nonpartisan.

But sometimes I just have to step away from information overload.

We tend to immerse ourselves in nature and good books and good food and seek to live a "balanced life".
Last night we were doing our after dinner mile walk around the driveway, and almost stumbled onto a baby fawn all curled up. Hub said we wouldn't finish our walk, as the mother had seen us coming and told the baby to lie down. She wouldn't come get it as long as we were around.

So we went back to the house and sure enough, this morning when we went out for our
morning walk about the baby deer was gone. Nothing like nature to broaden your mindset.

I just can't let them rule my life. I have chosen to filter out what I watch. What do you all do to keep sane and in good spirits?
Find and make Good News.
People are Delighted and Helped for life whenever they find the old time remedies for so-called modern ailments,
and are able to avoid the toxic substances too many places use to change symptoms but make things overall worse.

For hundreds of years, maybe thousands, native americans , and natives or residents in other countries,
used natural means and helps to remain healthy, strong, active, and to reverse problems if any came up.

Like doctors who once obeyed their first rule: Do No Harm. / changed by the overlords of the system a half century ago to first doing harm/ ....
GOOD NEWS IS , you might still be able to find someone doing no harm, rather doing GOOD , the old=ways.

I think this will turn around at some point. It may take a couple of years with a couple of elections. Maybe November will help.

The young people will be okay. They will take over one day. They are probably learning from this what not to do.

People are protesting across the U.S. today to try to get lawmakers to do something about gun violence. It won't make any difference, but it makes people feel like they're at least trying. And it's something to do. :)
It might make the same difference legislation/voting/ doing something/ had in the past - make things worse again.

Now , then, if they would do away with the drugs and medicines that alter, change, and degrade people's thinking and mind and body health, THAT could make a difference immediately /like when doctors went on strike for three months, immediately the death rate dropped dramatically; when they came back to work, immediately the death rate went bake up .

Men who worked for decades pointed out earlier on another thread that "young people" don't know nor did they learn how to work, others showed they often do not know how to cook or do laundry.... and THEY are the ones who are supposed to help somehow some day ?

Yes, they hear and see what NOT to do, but very few ever see what TO DO, anywhere, or at least not enough to help.

First I research to try to determine if it is real news that warrants concern or fake news distributed by someone trying to stir the pot or deliberate mislead. I'm limited as to how much action I personally can take but I believe in staying well informed about my world and what is going on in it. I have control over very little these days ..... how I spend my money, how I vote, how I interact with others ... but I do my best to be a good citizen and staying well informed is part of that.

Did you feel the same way when you were young? About the civil rights marches, the anti-war marches?
