Seriously it is hard. If possible, for important issues, I try to research original sources. For the Covid stuff that sometimes works, but for other issues not so much. Pretty hard to find original sources for say news of the Ukraine or China.

I am not sure this is any worse than it used to be, we just have so many more outlets and choices the differences are obvious. They can't all be right.

Publicly and privately, yes, it is much much worse than it was in 1940. Censorship, blatantly, is widely used online and all media the corporations have power over one way or another. Few exceptions exist.

RE "original sources" ... How about bibliographies, about personal and professional lives detailed, like a book of someone who lived in our lifetime whether they have passed on yet or not ?
And information simply stated in their bibliographies , easy to understand, in harmony with all known facts, smoothly without contradictions and no double-speak/twisting words back and forth like is usually seen or heard today in any media/ political/ medical / educational/ financial sources ?
(even if it challenges, and it must or what good would it be?, even when it challenges what you learned from your parents or in life previous to today ? )
 
A fair number of mainstream media has abandoned the two independent source policy with unwitnessed news stories and major events. Thus they resemble social media outlets which as of late are the new platforms for disinformation campaigns. The local news desk just transmits local public safety public information releases.

You know, we don't really have to deal with the media at all. We can get information directly from the source.

So, we don't have to listen to a news report about the WHO. We can go to the WHO website itself and read the actual reports directly.

Take Ukraine. The current PR person for the Pentagon is an actual retired Admiral! So, that news is not coming from media spin, its coming from an admiral.

Then, you can go farther and find a group of retired admirals, no longer under the military command structure, who offer their opinions.

And that is direct, without the summary and interpretation of some media representative.

It's like that across the board.

So, if you dig into things, you can find a more accurate source of information, than just the local newscaster.

You can find the actual professionals, with decades of actual experience...real advice from competent professionals.

And stay away from people who just constantly demonize others. It is a low tactic. Just spew criticism and hate so that you never listen to a thing that their target says.
 
I read/watch experts on a subject give their view. Then from other experts that have a differing and sometimes conflicting view. In the end I am usually persuaded by my own preferred bias. Sometimes other views will become interesting and can eventually change my mind, but not too often. )

Yes, and I did that decades ago, fwiw. Licensed Practicing Doctors and Scientists and Microbiologists and Virologists and Researchers were available most of the last 100 years, with first hand, not second hand, research, investigations, reports and professional and independent verification ,
confirming that many if not all sources that are under the thumb of the corporations
are , surprise, not honest.
