How do you handle your cash?

My ex used to cram waded up $20 bills in the pockets of her winter clothes. Then a year later, she had "found money", when she reached into her pockets. I always thought it was "lost" money. She "found' crumpled bills in her purse all the time. Me, on the other hand, have to have bills in descending order neatly in my wallet. I had a friend, who had to iron her bills. How do you handle your cash?
 

Around $100-120 in bills in my purse and in Spouse's wallet. We have a wall safe which holds emergency funds (ATMs won't work without electricity, LOL), and we each keep a 'secret stash' of cash. The rest stays in the bank and the brokerage accounts.

Not much use for cash, but it comes in handy on occasion so is still useful.

Wad up cash? I can't envision ever crumpling it up. Or do you mean she had a whole wad of money?

If I expect to need cash to pay for something, I fold it before stuffing it in my back pocket, then if I haven't spent it, usually it comes out and sits around the house until the next time I expect to need it, or, sometimes, I find it in the washing machine.

I remember I once "found" my own money -- it was cash in an envelope in a suitcase (apparently I'd taken it on a trip in case of emergencies). It was so exciting to find it, because at the time I was unemployed (during the 2009 mess).
 
When it comes to cash, I'm usually odd man out. I always carry a minimum of $300, and have done so for 35 or so years. Before that, it was $100 from the time I was 20-21. Funny thing is, I rarely use cash, but feel secure carrying it and don't flaunt it.

It always amazed me that only a couple of my coworkers (all well paid professionals) had more than $20 on them at a time. The rest hit the ATMs regularly are used plastic for their meals.

Before you criticize me too much, know that I've had a concealed carry license since 1995, when first issued. And like they say, "I NEVER leave home without it".
 
Very small amount in my wallet is separated by denomination mostly enough to leave a decent tip when we eat out. Credit & debit cards replaced need to carry cash. But really handy is the no charge for ATM use when higher amount of cash might be needed.

Wad up cash- my ex would crumble up a $5, 10 0r 20 and stick it in her pocket, and forget about it.
 
Wadding up today's plastic notes wouldn't really work.

But I literally don't carry cash. There's no cash inside my home.
 
Living here in southeast Texas - where major storms are fairly common - as are electrical outages, I do keep emergency cash at home.
 
If losing a couple of hundred from your wallet or a thousand or two from your home are going to break you at our ages then you have bigger problems.

Much bigger than things like home safes or the insanity of carrying loaded weapons to compensate. "Compensate" being the operative word.

I pay cash to my hairdresser who comes to the house every month.
Don't keep any in the house. Go to the bank/post office/ATM when it's needed.
 
Since the start of this year (2024 ) I have not had any actual cash in my hands at all. Credit and debit cards for all transactions are a common thing here in Canada. I do have about $40 in coins in a small Tuperware bowl on the top of my bedroom dresser. I buy and sell gold and silver and all of my sales are done through INTERAC electronic banking. Instant and no cost to use it. JimB.
 
I only keep $20. in cash on me. If out with a purse I sometimes keep my little wallet in my front pants pocket. A diversion, old habit.

Sometimes when I'm with my grandson I have very little cash so I can honestly tell him "Grandma has NO money."
 
I keep cash on hand to pay my mail kid weekly, lawn guy each
time, and tip the pharmacy girl when she delivers...thats about all the cash stuff I do....oh and pay my barber lady when she
does her thing.....

we have polymer Notes in the UK... you can't fold them or scrunch them up... ...
