How do you stay mentally strong during health challenges?

Lately I've been thinking about the connection between physical health and mental resilience. When you're facing a tough health situation whether it's chronic illness, recovery, or something new what helps you stay mentally strong?

Do you turn to books, music, meditation, or maybe supportive people around you? I’d love to hear what works for you, especially on the tough days.

Thanks for sharing — your thoughts might help someone else too.

The words that my father told me when I was young and my mother was in a coma and would most likely die provide the clearest view of reality..."there's not too much you can do about it."

When it comes to facing life threatening challenges, you realize that all you can do is take things one day at a time.
Realize that there are limits in life.

The more accepting of things in life that you are, the better you can deal with them.

I was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma many years ago. If that one metastasizes, there is no treatment. Mine was caught early, although the tumor was very large, and the only treatment was to remove the kidney. At first, I was confronted with the usual emotions when diagnosed with a serious potentially deadly disease. Quite early in that process, I came to understand my options were limited, and the only thing I could do was whatever was necessary, even if that wouldn't be enough.

I even switched doctors and hospitals when my doctor was putting off the operation for reasons that made no sense to me. You just do the best you can do, and find the best care you can. Sure, there are still some worries, but you do what must be done. The stress is cut in half, and probably more. At least that was my experience.

I have chronic kidney disease and do what my doctor suggests but some are way too expensive and I might need dialysis but not yet. I accept my condition and I am learning to live with it with diet and a little medication. My mother always said one day at a time and that seems to work for me.

I don't have a chronic illness, but like everyone else, I have tough days. No . . . books, music, and meditation do not help me. Supportive people, yes, but I try to avoid unloading my troubles on people. Most of them have their hands full managing their own.

I don't do well being idle. The busier, the better, but no matter what I do, anxiety can attack and almost immobilize me at times. I try to wait until it passes. When it does not, I have a prescription that helps, but I don't like using it unless I have to. There are no chemical solutions for life.

I believe we must ACCEPT everything bad which happens to us. We all have problems with our health eventually and getting upset about it will only make us sad and unhappy. Acceptance of all the bad things, which hit us, makes us continue to be happy. I've made it to 90 so far and do not even worry about dying. EVERYONE dies so it is NORMAL to die in the end.

My health challenges have mostly been joint pain. They were never life threatening, but they did affect mobility and quality of life.

My response was to take doctor's advice and trust the orthopaedic surgeons to do their job. Today I am reaping the benefit of co-operating with the health professionals. I am pain free, except for a few niggles, and life is good.

Like @Mitch I am not worried about dying. When the time comes, I will be ready to submit to the darkness without complaint or regret.
