How Do You Take a Break from the Serious Stuff?

Oy, too much news and you want to crawl into a hole and hide. War and hurricanes, and school shootings oh my. For me the most sobering was that list of how many shootings since Sandy Hook. So all this scary, depressing stuff. You have to step away from it regularly.

For you, how do you privately find your happy place despite the news? First thing of course is change the channel or turn off the TV. Three things I did yesterday just to feel happy. A long walk in the nature reserve. Sure you might meet a rogue bear, but not many shooters out there.

Hugging a warm cat, dog, spouse, child, friend, co-worker. Just for today you are all safe, all alive, all together.

Humor, I was at the bookstore. Two books that jumped into my hands " Oooooh take us home!". A jokey book about hipster animals and Dave Barry's latest. If you've ever read any of his columns or books...one of those writers that has you giggling from the introduction. The perfect antidote to current events.

I think it's best not to wallow in all the misery, it doesn't help anyone else and harms you.A good book, a bit of gardening, meet a friend, and never ever, in the dead of night think of any problems, either your own or the world's.

I agree with the turning off the TV/Net news - I try to stay dumb about most topics. It's true that ignorance is bliss.

I too take a walk in nature and hugs bears and strangers ... er ... well, I try to appreciate the simple things.

Dave Barry is a blast - I want to be like him if I grow up!

I'm a real worrier..in fact I would win a Gold Medal Hands down at it if it was an Olympic sport..so it's imperative I cut myself off from stressful stuff occasionally because I can get so stressed it literally makes me ill .

I'm teetotal so I can't drown out concerns and worries in a haze of alcohol , I often wish I liked the taste of it and could indulge in a glass or 2 to relax but I can't so I have to look for other ways!

I do all of what you do Fur when I need to just get my head clear and let go of life problems which weigh me down so ..I walk in the woods regularly , drive out to nice places and spend time with nature taking photographs, whether that's by the beach or in the city or wherever is different to what's happening in my real world .

I go one afternoon a week and volunteer to help with the dogs at the boarding kennels near my home, nothing more relaxing than spending time with animals who need you and love you for just being their friend.

I'm an Avid book reader, and I love music, so all of those help with short term release from pressures and worries, and when I'm really snowed under with life's woes...I book myself a holiday..in fact I'm going to do just that tomorrow. A week or 2 away in November to Southern Spain or Italy will be just the thing to reinvigorate the brain cells..away from all the pressures and the concerns,. No reading the news online, No watching the news on TV..just a complete break from the realities of every day .. :D

I was never a news buff or very political, just started paying attention more since I've been retired. I don't get too intense or serious about things, but I want to hear what's going on in the world. I enjoy comedy, take walks in nature (which I love) almost every day, and get away for a couple of weeks every now and then with no access to phone, TV or computer. Those breaks put everything in perspective, and help me to appreciate life, my husband, my furkids, etc.

It is Phil. The boat, which belongs to a friend, is called "In The Pink." I have been all over the nearby Gulf Islands on this craft. Hippie and art fairs etc. He also has a houseboat done in the style of a Victorian Painted Lady, which he moors at the marina. This one is named "Tickled Pink." I laughed when I first saw it. Wood floors, wainscoting, crystal chandeliers, mahogany staircase, tongue in cheek for sure. He even does gourmet dinner parties, white tie etc. lolololol. Also barbecued hot dog come as you are dos. Snicker. He is a true eccentric, you would enjoy each other. On occasion, when he is out of the country, or we are partying, I stay there. It is so much fun.

Wow - that's fantastic!

I lived on a houseboat for a few months down in Key West, Florida - man, that was fun. I had dolphins coming up every morning for some snacks and a few ladies from Duval Street in the evening. :devilish:

Unfortunately I had to go back north when the real world intruded, but I treasure those days.

Just reading some posts by Phill is enough to put a smile on the face  ..

Awww, shucks, Ma'am ... (blushing, hands behind back, stubbing toe in dirt)

You should be flattered Philly. I am seriously considering writing an article about you in the WACKO section of Psycho-Therapissed's Weekly, thoughtfully entitled: "As The Stomach Turns." Aka "Inside SifuPhil."
