thank you for that, I was trying not to google.. and I haven't but thanks for the link which explains a lot.. So do people in pensylvania decribe themselves as Northern Americans... ?
I'm not sure people still think in terms of that (i.e., defining oneself as a Northerner vs. a Southerner), but yes, they would, I believe. I myself have never heard anyone use the term "Northern American" or "Southern American," just "Northerner" or "Southerner," but—again, in my experience—those terms are rarely used. People tend to simply say which state they are from.

I've read that Europeans tend to be confused or even irritated when Americans say they are from a particular state and don't just say they are from the United States. But there are significant regional variations here. I, personally, enjoy knowing what specific state someone hails from. More out of curiousity than anything else, I guess.

I meant to say, good idea! I prefer to get real people's responses, too, rather than just doing an online search. :) I thought the map might help, though.

From a Southerner by birth AND a Yankee by heritage (my ggg-something grandfather fought for the North during the US Civil War in the 1860's)...

A Yankee is a reference to people who live(d) in the north east of the US during the Civil War and supported the abolishment of slavery. People are under the false assumption that slavery was practiced only in the Southern heavily agricultural states at that time. Not so. Many Yankees owned slaves, too, and there were Southerners who supported the abolition of it. The Civil War, North (manufacturing) against South (agriculture), was not just about slavery; it also was about economics and financial control of assets.

Yankees often referred to Southerners as Rebs (Rebels against the federal government) aka Johnny Reb (I don't know where the "Johnny" came from). Both terms were considered an insult, name calling, at that time. However, each side seemed to be proud of the labels. The War tore families apart and decimated the south's economy. Many Northerners came to the South to take advantage of the financial opportunities and force their political and social views on the southern society, which was quite different from the north ; they were called Carpet Baggers. Even now, the southern economy suffers in comparison to the north.

There are, to this day, many social differences between southerners and northerners. In the north, life is much faster paced, is focused more on financial success (Wall Street and major banks are centered there), whereas in the south, it is slower paced and social mores are focused on family, niceties, politeness, being helpful, etc. When a southerner calls someone a Yankee, the underlying meaning is they are rude, selfish, etc. It is true, in my experience, that as a visitor, you are ignored or treated rudely in places like NY. People who visit the south are surprised at how friendly it is.

It is also true that the best universities are located in the north. Harvard, Yale, et al. As a result, southerners are considered uneducated and stupid. Use the word "Y'all" and you are immediately seen as a stupid dupe. That isn't true but the idea has stuck.

There is much more to this than I can iterate here. I admit that I grew up in the south and have used the word "Yankee" in a negative way, even though we have a history of supporting freedom for all and my ancestors were Yankees who fought against slavery; we are proud of that. I have lived and traveled all over these United States and confirm that, in my personal experiences, Yankees, using the term as it is still used today, tend to be rude and selfish, whereas southerners are very polite, friendly and helpful.

I miss Texas, which btw fought against the abolition of slavery during the War. Strangely, owning slaves in Texas was against the law at the time, a hangover from Mexican rule. But you see, Texans don't like being told what to do so there is that, lol. It was "We don't support owning slaves, but we don't want you telling us we can't." So there.

Then there is the term "Rednecks". Which is another topic, lol.
thank you for taking the time to explain all that.. I have bolded that piece to explain that in the UK, generally speaking.. it's the opposite way around to the US with regard the North South divide... ... The South has better Universities, more money.. etc... and the north with their heavy accents, looked on traitionally as Dumb.. or stupid, and often mocked...

Of course like the USA it's not always true.. no-one knows better than me having been born and raised a northerner, and having lived now in the south for more than 50 years.. ..

The term rednecks is known here in the UK but not used... we understand it means American people who are what we call underclass... ( I don't know if that's the description Americans give them ) ..but it's an education to us .. and whenever I've asked in the past I've been attacked as ''anti-American'' nothing could be further from the truth .

Yes it's me that's making the definition of Southern American V Northern American, simply for readers clarity... but yes also in the UK it's Northerner or Southerner...(y)

absolutely untrue ! Europeans , British in particular are very clued up about America and it's geography , more so than Americans are about Europe, so if they were at all put out , it would be becaus an American would NOT say which state they're from..

If I'd known I was going to get great answers , I would have started a different thread.. but then again that might have brought in political answers, so we don't want that..

For now I'm going to say thank you everyone for explaining.. I know a lot more than I did yesterday... but before it gets politcial and we lose the thread by having it locked we better stop no...t hank you all 🤗

Good morning to everyone. I was raised in the West and only lived in a East Northern state once as a child. Of course the children there in school didn't refer to themselves as Yankees. I read about Yankees in books and in movies and yes, it was about the Civil War years.

I found in moving to Florida, the people and children were friendly and polite. It must be the way they were raised.

Anyway, another warm and sunny day in the 90's today.

I hope all of you stay well and enjoy today. :)

Afternoon peeps of SF... 🌷

It's another glorious sunny day... the temps are little lower than the last week at only 54 f... ,

I woke up this morning with my right ear blocked and I can't get it unblocked, I don't know what's going on there...

Anyway..I had hoped that I'd get some clear out of household goods this weekend for the charity.... but my hip is really hurting.. I don't know if it was made more painful by the back to back driving over 2 days without a day rest inbetween ... or with the gardening .. but either way it hurts like mad, and very painful to walk up and down stairs .. so roll on the end of April when my cortisone injection is due !

have the best day you can folks...

Oh! I forgot to add that the term "Yankees" is also combined with the word "damn", as in "DamnYankees". No explanation needed, lol.

Funny, I can feel myself slipping into the Southern Speak just in discussing this. It's a whole 'nother world.

@hollydolly when my ears are blocked I use an over the counter medication and it works well for me. When it clears it is a little pop sound and then I can hear well again. It is call Debrox. I used to go to a doctor and have my ears cleaned and that worked well right away. However, I do not have a regular doctor anymore just a specialized one.

Morning folks,,,

Was raining earlier ,now sunny.

Have a load of wash in the washer .
Might as well get that out of the way,,never know what tomorrow holds.

Hubby still having problems with his dentures
.
I suggested using peroxide & water to rinse his mouth with.
He told me he would stick to salt water.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Messenger_creation_9B1260BE-8254-4C72-A43D-5D5B6D4EF638.jpeg I guess I'm doing OK. Skating was not as good yesterday, as it usually is. It was freezing cold in the rink and the temperature must have aggravated all of my aches & pains. I just wasn't enjoying myself and ended up leaving early.

This morning, I slept in, so I'm having a late start to the day. I'm not sure what I'll be doing, but it's supposed to be 94°F today so I'll probably go for a walk or do other outside things, in the morning. Most likely I'll be in for the hottest part of the day.

I moved from the northern states to a popular retirement area in the south. A local (friend) here once asked me:

"Do you know the difference between a Yankee and a Damn Yankee?

Yankees come from up North. They spend their money in the tourist areas, and after a week or two they go back home.

A Damn Yankee comes from up North....and stays!"

This is what my daddy used to say :ROFLMAO: and said he was proud to be a damn Yankee because it showed that he had good sense when he moved to the South.

Had my winter harvest attempt at raising strawberries. Think I'll stick to the seasonal ones. 3 months, about $50 in supplies (plus electric for heating them) and alot of hard work! I got 1 perfect strawberry! 1… lololol
It was tasty though. 🤣
