Good morning, everyone. I made it through Mother's Day relatively unscathed.;) I had a great time catching up with my younger daughter at dinner. She's being promoted to charge nurse on her unit. She texted afterward, saying "I'd gotten you a card, but then at the bottom it said 'Happy Birthday'!":ROFLMAO: I told her I'd be happy to get any sort of card from her, at any time.

I'm still anxiously looking for new work. In the meantime I still am getting assignments. (To clarify, as an independent contractor I try to stay connected to about 4–5 publishing services at a time. In the past 18 months I've lost two with no warning and have to replace them ASAP. I procrastinated with replacing the first one. That was unwise.) Today's assignments look difficult. When the author has trouble mastering English, and their field of expertise is complicated (e.g., engineering), that's a tough mix.

Our weather is beautifully warm and sunny, but the winds are supposed to be quite high (30+ mph [48+ kmh]) all the way through the weekend. It gets a little irritating trying to do anything outdoors. But at least we don't have any snow!

I hope everyone's week is getting off to a good start.
 
Yesterday I went forth and rode, and brought back pics, but they won't load!!!

Frustrating.

The ride to Stanley Lake was about ~150 miles round trip and the first ride of the year that didn't require my grip and seat heater. 60 or so antelope in several groups were spotted, 2 mule deer both feeding in the borrow pit next to the road in the twisties(thanks to the motorist that flashed headlamps as a warning), one immature bald eagle, and an osprey.

The Forest Service was out doing some small controlled burns, but the wind picked up out of Rx so they stopped.

Northbound traffic was heavier so the "slack" btwn tourist seasons is not quite as slack as it's been. Lots of people already escaping the oncoming heat w temps at 90°F in the nearby population centers. It's going to be a long hot, smoky summer!!

Today work out, and the business of life!
 
Happy 12th of May, fellow SFers!

Yesterday I said I didn't know if today would be busy (business-wise)... well my tracking update from UPS tells me to expect 28 cartons this afternoon and 28 more between Thurs and Fri. And, as Karen Carpenter sang so beautifully, we've only just begun.

Despite having the above labor intensive work in front of me, I'm determined to stay with the 5 day a week workout program I decided to commit to, so I'll be heading to the kitchen and my laptop to get going on that. Yesterday I tried using the weighted vest I bought recently. I removed six weights so it only added a little over a little over six pounds to my upper body, but felt a big difference nevertheless. (Hoping that adding upper body weights will help increase bone density.)

I fired up the whacker,, trimmed what I hadn't trimmed last week.
Lunch was easy as Hubby has to eat lightly do radiation treatments this week.

We had nice brake as nephew came in to tell us he's burning the limbs from his wind fallen trees.
Enjoyed chatting with him .

Hubby got busy in the wood pile.
I tackled the flower beds,pulling weeds & replanting the old seeds I'd saved.
Hope some of them grow & bloom.
 
It just goes to show, reporting companies to the credit card provider pays dividends...

Like I said yesterday after getting empty promises from the garage who didn't carry out the MOT on my car after I'd paid in advance for it .. about refunding my money, I finally raised a dispute with my CC provider yesterday .. and today got an email from the garage head office saying the money will be in my bank within 3 days

We're almost home. We've been on the road for 14 hours. We almost hit a deer early this mirning. Of course, four of those hours were stuck on I-95 while it was closed.

Strange thing. Someone reported a man with a dog and a rifle walking alongside the highway. When the police showed up, he shot the dog and then himself. The dog died. I don't know about the man.

Highway southbound in Georgia closed for hours. Seems like there was no need for that....
 
A former neighbor was sorry she couldn't accompany me to an important doctor visit today. She contacted one of her friends in this area who is very sharp with medical matters. The friend met me at the office and took notes on her laptop. She asked all the right questions and engaged the doctor in a long conversation. That was so much better than going alone. I learned a lot and feel reassured that we are headed in the right direction. Both friend and friend's friend seem to really enjoy helping. Lucky me.

that's fabulous...ooh don't we all wish we had a friend like that to accompany us to the doctors?... I for one can never remember to either ask the right questions..or remember what the doctor said...
 
Today was so different from yesterday when I wasn’t able to do anything. I usually give myself an extra day to rest after an A-Fib episode, but today I went full throttle.
~Cleared the clutter off and disinfected my desk in the studio so that I could..
~Fill three pill cases. For a week I’ve been opening pill bottles to get my meds, which is ridiculous because I take a lot of them.

~Cleaned the bathroom and kitchen, including doing the floors.
~Met with the contractor, discussed the remodel and gave him the deposit checks (one was for cabinet, countertop & accessories supplier). So as we say "This sh*t just got real !"

~Met with the managing agent about getting the renovation loan and paid my HOA fee.
~Had a conversation with my son about what we need to do to prepare for the renovations and some financial stuff. He mentioned that our cousin, who works the polls, said she was surprised she didn’t see me today. Then I realized it was voting day, so I went and did that.
 
Mrs.L has decreed that the chimney needs swept. There aren't so many sweeps around these days, and those that there are, tend to be part of larger companies rather than one man operations. The last sweep was fine - no hassle, just put the brush up the chimney, cleaned the flue and collected the soot with a vacuum cleaner made for the purpose.

Now, I'm getting ads for fancy space age cleaning and supersonic inspections. Hopefully I'll find a traditional sweep (who's not too busy with weddings) and charges a reasonable price.
 
Morning all, the birdies woke me up at 5 was able to go back to sleep until 6:15, turned on local classical radio station
On usual early walk at 6:45 it was lightly raining, temp was 54 as I strolled around the building once before breakfast When I came back in the sun was trying to peak through the clouds. If it does become a sunny day that will be the 4th day in a row,we've had enough rain for awhile
Yesterday had mentioned I didn't get my NYT,turns out another resident got it by mistake
I had asked a church friend to come today for lunch but she informed me last night she has a cold, we'll try another time .No real plans today,ck today's lunch/dinner menu,read today's NYT,my book
Tonight on PBS at 8pm,on 'Nature' another installment with David Attenborough

I'll answer... if Capt doesn't mind.... yes chimney sweeps ar supposed to be lucky at weddings. he stays hidden until after the vows, and then shakes the Hand of the groom and kisses the bride... he's usually booked as a surprise by another guest...

during the reign of King George II (1683-1760), and legend has it that a chimney sweep saved the king’s life when a rabid dog bit the leg of the horse driving the royal carriage, sending the horse into a writhing frenzy. The story goes that a kindly chimney sweep took control of the horse, soothing it before disappearing back into the crowd, which allowed the procession to continue.


King George was so taken by the sweep’s actions he declared the profession ’lucky’, and from then on, the chimney sweep’s lot changed from a humble working-class occupation to the elevated status of lucky charm. However, let’s not sweep over the fact that in the 18th century, most sweeps were small children aged 6-10, and child labour laws were not abolished until 1833. This interesting historical context further adds to the mystique surrounding the wedding chimney sweep, making their role even more fascinating.


Child labour aside, there was another reason that chimney sweeps were considered lucky: a more practical and domestic reason. When a bride became a wife, she was in charge of the household. Unless she was lucky enough to have servants, it was a wife’s job to do all domestic chores, from cooking to cleaning and keeping the home warm and inviting. An efficient open fire was vital, and without the chimney sweep, none of this would have happened. If the new bride didn’t know the chimney sweep, she couldn’t become the mistress of a well-run house. Hence, the wedding chimney sweep played a crucial role in ensuring the new bride’s domestic success.


With reputation being the only thing a woman could own, having a reputation as a good housekeeper was vital and could be the difference between a happy marriage and a miserable one.


So the stage was set, and the wedding chimney sweep became a pivotal figure in folklore and the luck they provided an important part of any wedding ceremony. However, having a sweep attend your wedding is not as simple as you might think.

Different day today....weatherwise, Been hail-stoning just now... only lasted about 30 minutes.. but it feels cold as well ....

Got sent a beautiful flat to view in London by the agents.. It's on the 9th floor.. but it's stunning.. really lovely.... and all that I want.. huge floor to ceiling windows..great big kitchen Island.... loads of storage.. big balcony... trouble is, I'm not sure now if I want to live in the city... and this flat is in a very built up newly regenerated area.. :unsure:...something to think about today...

No , in fact it would be much more further away from DD.... it's about 15 miles from here going south ..altho' with high volume traffic it takes about 45 minutes up to an hour and a half to drive there... ... my daughter lives north

What I'm thinking is altho' the flat is gorgeous... I'm thinking of the high crime in the city... and the fact that due to that... Insurances etc.. rise exponentially..
 
@hollydolly, I don't envy your difficult decision between city and more rural life. What about moving to a small village (the kind they show in movies & tv)? Knowing how carefully you research and ponder choices, I have every confidence that you'll make the decision that's best for you.

I LOVE the chimney sweep information. We have no similarly charming connections to sweeps in this country.
 
Good morning everyone. It is cloudy but will be 84 today. We had a lot of rain yesterday and the grass is getting greener, it is better for our forests, too.

I had to cancel some appointments to a later day today. My husband is not able to keep some due to his health condition. I have a doctors appoint later this month but will keep it.

I hope all of you are well and enjoy today.

that is where I live now..lol... and there's 2 reasons for me to move...the first is to have everything on one level... because of the continuing problem with AO in my knees.. so I no longer want stairs to climb.. and the other is to have something to do for someone my age...

here in the villages, and rural shires there's nothing, in the nearest market town, all entertainment is geared for either children..or 20-50's max.. and any ''senior'' things.. are for people who think old.. in the sense of quilt making, gardening, card and jam making... it's not for me... and tends to attract people much older than me...

I want to go and dance.., I want to go to a photography class.. or a language class.. I want to go where there's like minded people my age.. not people who are happy to sit and knit, not that there' anything wrong with crafts ...but they're not for me.. ... ..and none of what I want is available in these villages and small towns...

For that I need to be in a much more metropolitan area... ..but you're right, I am a deep researcher, and so I will cerefully weigh up my choices... (y)

Good morning - a lovely, cool day today with a forecast high of 74°. We won't hit the low 80s until Monday, and even then it'll just be just a handful of days before we're back in the 70s.

Working today. I processed 10 cartons yesterday afternoon so will do the remaining 18 today. Planning to knock out another ten later this morning then will finish up in the afternoon after giving my back a couple of hour break.

I'll check in with you kids later. Hope all have a lovely day.
 
We have a paper shredding event coming up on Saturday. They do one in spring and another in fall. We are allowed to bring up to ten boxes. If only I had remembered to save some boxes to fill. I think I have three. Once I bought some from Walmart for $1.25 each. That could work.
