Well at 8am this Saturday morning, drove the mile to a Whole Food market and per above bought a 32 ounce package of Driscoll's Strawberries for $6.99. Then ate a couple of the reddest ones. Compared to regular supermarket strawberries, I would tentatively agree they are more flavorful and maybe somewhat sweeter. But not as sweet as the wild beach strawberries I mentioned. It may be that the Driscoll's Sweetest Strawberries are a seasonal product that indeed is sweeter, however that doesn't seem to be a current product, even online.
Here is what Google AI relates:
Wild beach strawberries (Fragaria chiloensis) are significantly sweeter than standard supermarket varieties primarily because of their size, their evolutionary adaptation to harsh coastal environments, and the way they are harvested.
Here is why they pack such an intense flavor punch:
- Higher Sugar Concentration: Wild strawberries are tiny. Because they are so small, they contain much less water than plump, commercially grown strawberries, leading to a higher concentration of natural sugars and aromatic compounds.
- Sun Exposure and Terroir: Native to coastal dunes, wild beach strawberries are battered by ocean winds, intense sunlight, and poor, sandy soil. This harsh environment stresses the plant, forcing it to channel its energy into producing robust, flavorful fruit to attract wildlife and ensure seed dispersal.
- Vine-Ripened Perfection: Supermarket strawberries are bred for durability, size, and shelf-life. They are usually picked while still white or pale so they don't bruise during shipping, meaning they never develop their full sugar potential. Wild strawberries ripen fully on the vine, allowing them to develop their maximum natural sweetness.

Growing up, my parents enjoyed gardening and would often plant strawberries. Like the wild variety, they were small sweet berries that I loved to eat. This is a small crop from recent photo of wild beach strawberries I took during my North Coast road trip:
