I got a hand held rechargeable clippers. They are the bomb. Faster than regular clippers. Easier than weed eaters. It came with a hedge trimmer head too. You can't do real big jobs but I use it a lot like to cut back all the liriope and clip the pampas grass. It's sunjoe brand. Maybe you could use your money on something like that.@RadishRose Nah...when it's all planted, the weeds are fewer. Believe me, I won't do anything that would jeopardize the recovery!
I wanted to go to the garden centers, but whatever DD and DGD were fussing about this morning has taken a toll on DD, and she wasn't up for going. Maybe after work tomorrow or another day this week. I did transfer a crapton of $$ to my checking account to fritter away whenever I get there.
There's a long, long row of monkey grass (maybe 100ft?) at the far edge of the lawn before the flowers start, and it's overgrown to a point where it's so high that it obstructs my view of some of the flowers. I had this bright idea that I could cut it down myself using just the nippers. Pffft. Talk about slow going!
Then I got the bright idea of using the mower on it. Errrrr. Not a good idea because the monkey grass is so thick that the motor overheated. So much for that. What on earth was I thinking? Grateful that I didn't kill the mower and have to use flower $$ to buy a new one.
DD said she's going to ask the guy who does her front and side lawns to use his weed whacker on it. We have a weed whacker, but DD is reluctant to even show me how to use it (probably afraid that I'd cut my legs off, and she wouldn't be wrong). It's a big job so she doesn't want to do it herself because the stupid string thingie keeps breaking and having to be restrung. Can't say I blame her. The lawn dude's weed whacker uses a blade, not a string. He's gonna do it for just an extra $40 when he comes this week. Yay.
Sounds fun! I hope you have a good time.lol..I'm fortunate to have friends.. and to be able to shop regularly... but I haven't been to Watford for ages, because it just got so busy and built up, ..and it put me off .. but I'll be meeting a couple of friends who are still working at the studios not far away... ...
well it's forecast to be a glorious day tomorrow, so I'm looking forward to it...Sounds fun! I hope you have a good time.
There are a bunch...which model do you have?I got a hand held rechargeable clippers. They are the bomb. Faster than regular clippers. Easier than weed eaters. It came with a hedge trimmer head too. Enjoy your splurge, GG!@RadishRose In any case, the garden isn't going to get bigger; it's just going to get more plants in places that are still bare because I refused to spend enough money to do it all. So now I've got a buncha money that I'm gonna spend as soon as I can get to the garden centers. Yup. I'm gonna shop with abandon and snatch up everything I see that I've been wanting. Greedy. I feel greedy! Gimme gimme gimme.
Talked to my brother in the UP a little while ago. He says it's spring and then some up there but sure there will still be more sNOw. And surprise, surprise, my sister who sold her house two years ago and moved "south" to Wisconsin to live with her DD/DSIL? That didn't work. She's back in the UP and living in an apartment. Ain't everybody who can live under the same roof as their grown kids, and if I didn't have my own separate living quarters, I couldn't do it for sure! There have been times when I just wanted to get the heck outta here even with my own space.
DH reminded me to squirt the blades often while using with W-D 40 to keep it lubricated and working well. There are a bunch...which model do you have?
Oops. You beat me to it. I'll go look.
Okay then! the 604C is the one I liked, too. I watched the video comparing to the Black & Decker. Think the Sun Joe is the better buy. Gonna get one. Thanks!
I read Treasure Island several times as a child in school and out, was my favourite book for many years but I don't think that I ever read it as an adult.. you've made me think I may get a copy and read it now, and see if I see it through different eyesGood day here…. Visited with Ed and started a new book (Treasure Island). What a great writer RL Stevenson was!
Napped this after noon, had a al fresco dinner, then spent a while doing pruning in the garden and spreading more blood meal to help deter the deer. I have a day lily that’s fixin’ to bloom and I wanna see it actually open (the deer seem to find these a delicacy)
The mosquitoes started nibbling on my ankles, so I put the garden stuff away and now I’m relaxing inside.
I've thrown a lot of stuff [not junk] away over the years and now regret it? could/should have passed it on!I threw more old junk and mail away today, emptying 2 drawers. Why did I have all those remotes?
Vacuumed, etc. Sunny all day but now clouds moving in.
OMGoodness Packleader...those wounds look serious! How to catch a rooster and lose a hen; or, the saga of a suburban micro farm
Both my wife and I had our happiest childhoods on farms. So, when I heard three years ago that a large chicken farm gave away egg-laying hens for free, I told my wife about it. OK, we got four hens for free and paid $250 for a chicken coop (center picture) the price of which has gone up to $450 in the meantime. Because egg-laying hens live only 2 - 3 years, and we may have gotten older ones anyway, the last hen died a year ago.
I had enough of chickens because I had done all of the work. But my wife had gotten the hang of it. Within two months, she bought two baby chicks although one turned out to be a rooster (bottom left.) Because my wife wanted to have more eggs, she bought yesterday another chick that died within hours. We buried it on our pet cemetery this morning (top left) where a dozen dogs and other pets rest in heavenly peace.
My wife bought this evening two more chicks (top right.) She also found someone who would take her unwanted rooster although I had fallen in love with its crowing. It brought back so many happy memories, but it's futile to argue with my wife. To catch the rooster, she laid out a row of chicken favorites leading into a large box, a la Hansel and Gretel, but no luck. I tried a blanket and almost caught it, but this rooster is a brave warrior (see bottom right.) I checked online my immunization records, and my tetanus booster still covers me.
Eventually, we waited till it was dark and the chickens had gone to sleep. This time I won the game. The rooster is now in a box inside my car waiting to be driven to the new owner. In the meantime, however, the hen had left the chicken coop in search of its mate. It turned out that the hen is a more talented escape artist than the rooster. We searched in vain for an hour in the dark without finding it. Our hope is that tomorrow morning the hen will hopefully find its way back to where the food is, namely the chicken coop.
Last not least, my wife somehow blamed me for all the misfortune. Over the years, I learned my lessons and kept quiet.

Good news: just before midnight we located and caught the hen, but only after I lost my footing and roled down a slope
Treasure Island! Enjoy.Good day here…. Visited with Ed and started a new book (Treasure Island). What a great writer RL Stevenson was!

I'm filled with hope that young people are still offering seats. Take them and enjoy the ride. Nice pictures! The sun came out in NYC today (finally). I visited the Museum of Modern Art today, someone from the retirement community I live in had recommended a particular exhibit, and my goodness it had a lot of film playing on the wall of totally naked people (male and female) just standing and another person coming up to them and taking off his coat and he was all naked too. Deary me. I didn't take any pictures in that exhibit! ha ha.
I also took a tram ride to a little (240 meter wide) Island that is in the middle of the river between Manhattan and Queens. Nowadays it is built up with a lot of modern tall apartment buildings, but the island used to be used for housing sick people and had an interesting old crumbling smallpox hospital.
I'm starting to get worn out with all the walking and stairs and touring around, and perhaps it is showing because a stranger on the street (old like me, and with a walking stick which if I was sensible I'd carry too) asked me where I was trying to go, pointed to the correct corner subway entrance and then gave special directions for minimizing the number of stairs I'd need to use. Younger people on the subway keep bouncing out of their seats and offering them to me. So kind of them, and I really appreciate it, but gee, how old do I look?!
