How many carry a garage door opener in your car?

I do. Now suppose a criminal quickly enters your car which is parked at your worksite, a long term parking lot, or even the supermarket. In less than 2 minutes he can open your car, remove the garage door opener, take your registration (by law you must have it in the car), your insurance proof. Now, he knows where you live (it's on the registration and insurance papers) has an opener to gain entry, once there he can go straight into the house via the pedestrian door in the garage. Oh you say "No! I lock that pedestrian door!" Most of us do not. But even if locked and the criminal has no tools of his own I'm betting you have plenty in the garage to let him in.

You expect a preventive tip here? I have none. We are screwed.

I have a solution for those who exclusively use the vehicle. Carry the registration and insurance papers in your wallet. Now the crook can loot the car but he doesn't know where you live, thus saving the family jewels. For those who must spit the car with other family members....you're still screwed but I'll keep thinking.

Don't have a portable one. Mine is integrated into my rear view mirror where there are 3 buttons.
The middle one is the garage door operator.

It also CLOSES the door besides OPENING it.

How did he get in the car without the alarm going off? Doesn't your cell phone alert you? mine does.

I have a opener on the sun visor of my car that opens a wrought iron security gate to the complex where I live. A secondary button will turn on the TV and entry lights to my apartment.

Davey, I am one of the older set who don't carry a cell phone. I have one in my car for roadside emergencies though.

When I was driving, I never kept registration in my car. I always kept registration, insurance card, and license in my wallet.

Some people keep various things in their car which identifies them by name/address. Not smart these days.

People I know always lock the door leading from garage to kitchen/inside of the house. So I’m not sure location of garage door opener - in and of itself - is the issue.

I have the perfect setup (for the crook, that is), all necessary papers in glove-box, garage door opener on sun visor, key to house in car, attached garage.

Your post is food for thought, Jim. I need to make some changes. Soon.

I do not keep registration or insurance documents in the car. Haven't done that since my car was stolen in DC back in the 60s and a policeman pointed out that now the bad guys had my car AND my address. I also have a breakaway keychain so that I never have to leave my housekey with my car key if I use valet parking (also a suggestion of that long-ago officer).

Don't have a garage door opener, my garage was converted long ago to living area, so my car stays in my driveway.

It's not the law here in the UK to carry your documentation in the car or even on your person, so we don't...but if you're stopped by the police for any reason you have 5 days to produce them at your nearest police station

When we moved to Spain years ago, I was horrified to discover that like you folks in the USA you have to carry your documents in the car at all times..or risk an on the spot fine..and believe me the Spanish Police will stop you for anything and everything and the fines are at the discretion of the individual Guardia Civil member ..corruption within the police force in Spain is rife..so you don't ever want to be giving them an excuse to fine you, so you carry the damn paperwork around with your name and address on for every potential car thief to see..*jeez*..I hide mine in a secret place in the car tho'. thieves would almost have to take the car apart to find them ..I never leave the remote control for the electric gates in the car...they are always on a chain on my key fob.

Good for you Holly. I have decided to put my docs in my wallet.
