How Many Fast Food Places Were There Where You Grew Up?

We had a White Castle, a Mcdonalds and a Prince Castle. Later a KFC and an A&W. The reason for the question is many grew up in very small towns and had none (lucky for them).

We had a Dairy Queen but only ate there when on a date. Parents would have never considered spending money there. It just was not done. Now my kids order from door dash and never give it a second thought!

We only had this one locally owned fast food restaurant when I was a kid.

You could get a burger or a milkshake for 15 cents and fries cost a dime, a complete meal for 40 cents.

My parents used to pull in at Carrol's so we could get our meal and then drive to the other end of the parking lot to get a real fish sandwich hand cut fries and a chocolate milk from a wonderful little family owned joint for themselves.

Both places are long gone. The family that started Carrol's in 1960 converted all of their restaurants to Burger Kings and today they are the largest Burger King franchise in the world with over 800 stores.

If I had it to do over again I would choose the little dive with the hand cut fries!

Pizza Hut, Burger Chef (15 cent hamburger), Dairy Queen, A&W with the giant rootbeer on the roof. Also a "Taco Rey" where you could get 10 tacos for a dollar. Several mom & pop burger places.

We had a Dairy Queen, and KFC, then McDonald's came in, which was a big deal! Carroll's burgers were across the street, and Burger King eventually replaced it.

Back in my day there was just an A&W drive in where we all took our dates. I remember when the first McDonalds opened up in our area. It was a big deal because as a high school student we could not afford to take our dates to regular restaurants all the time. Plus there were the Munchies which made fast food a necessity. :)

Never heard of 'fast food' places until as a teenager we went to Plattsburg, NY and I saw my first A&W.
First one I remember here was a Dairy Queen and they only had ice cream.

I remember walking to McDonalds with my friend back in the day and for $1.07 we would each get a cheeseburger, small fries and a small coke.

Only fish & chip shops,... nothing else.. No Chinese, Indian, Turkish, MacDonalds, Kfc, No burger King no take outs, except for the Fish & chip shops.. ... ( McDonalds didn't open their first store here in the uk until almost the end of 1974....)... hard to believe we had so little even into the 70's..given the zillions of different take -away outlets we have now..

HD, Did the fish&chips come in a wrapped up newspaper cone? They did when I was there. (Many years ago in Stoke-on-Trent.)

yes they certainly did... and we still say to this day that fish and chips don't taste the same as they did back then now they're served in polystyrene trays ...

That said, the ink didn't come off the newspaper in those days lol...

We had an A & W that was located across from our swimming pool and we had a Reid's drive in that was locally owned (not a food chain) that made the best cherry limeades. Both used car hops, trays on your car window. Honk your horn or flash your lights when you are ready to have them come back and get the tray. A & W served the root beer in frosty glass mugs.

There were two local places, then came McDonalds, Burger Chef, Hardees and Burger King.

The local places are still there as are McD and BK, but Burger Chef and Hardees left after awhile.

Where i grew up?.....Well, when I was 'kid' young, the only one I would consider 'fast-food' would have been A&W Root beer....and a local place called Putz's, actually an Ice cream stand . At both , you could walk up & order food.

The first McDonalds I remember locally opened in 1967. Seems like after that they all flooded in.

I grew up small town southern. No fast food places when I was growing up but when I was in high school, a locally owned restaurant with carhops on roller skates was opened.

the only place my sister and i would go to is woolworths dime store for a root beer float--after church my mom would take us to little restaurant for squash pie-- it was delishous

There were none during the 50's where I grew up. I think there was a White Castle about 20 miles away but it looked so dirty and we would have to take the bus to get there. Once in awhile as a treat my Mom and I would have lunch in Woolworths if we were out shopping for the day. In the 60's we got a Dairy Queen and a Carvel right across the street from one another.

My Dad would drive us there once in awhile during the summer. We liked Carvel so much better than Dairy Queen.

Once the Carvel was closed so we crossed the street to the Dairy Queen. My Grandma went to the window and asked for a small Carvel cone. She never lived that down.
