And why or why not?
While features like this are in demand in most forums, and can be useful ( I am speaking from having 10 years exp as a moderator & publisher of a very popular cosmetic surgery website in the US).

I welcome all conversation, and if I feel that the conversation is becoming pointless I just leave it.

The reason, we can all learn from each other and often people may be offended by ones point of view (especially by me as I am pretty straight forward, but not with the intention of hurting someone rather the opposite)

So, if you ignore someone and they may have took some time to think about the conversation/debate (which my husband and I love to do, especially him!!) I want them to have the opportunity to reach out regardless of their view.

Zero on any forum I belong to. My reason is not near as philosophical as some.

“You can’t fix stupid “ and sometimes it’s pretty entertaining to read.

Nothing says I HAVE to read comments so why bother with a block. I can cursor past any post without reading it, thus “blocking” it without using the software block.

My suspicion has been most web community forum members that tend to use such options, do so because they cannot resist looking at annoying posts. Same thing with people in supermarket checkout lines that cannot resist being baited into buying inane tattler and sensationalizing kind of news magazines. Or worse, that DOES annoy this person, is when driving on freeways, getting stuck behind long lines of slow to stopped vehicles only to find out it was all because of the few, inconsiderate, rubbernecking with looky-loo syndrome of many boneheads that once they approach whatever can't themselves resist doing the same thing that makes everyone angry.

Some don't want to look at posts by those that purposely personally try to annoy them after whatever they post. In our case, as with most civil forums like SF that don't allow such behavior, such is not much a factor though is always a legitimate reason as in "out of sight...out of mind".

Others may use an ignore option if:

  • Posters regularly post with capitalized and or bolded text.
  • Posters regularly dump long chains of images in their posts that require annoying scrolling through.
  • Occasionally trolls may appear that before they are banned, may flood threads with endless inane posts.
  • Those that don't know how to edit or filter their own messages from cameras just dump raw images into threads regardless of what is on their camera devices.
  • And some may put this person on ignore because I use dark colored text that some browser's in dark mode make viewing text difficult. Something mr dave won't be pressured to change for the sake of those few, because it is easy for them to read such text with few mouse clicks.

I would have liked to been able to ignore some of the people I worked with, mostly pilots. I had a pilot that would come up behind me and slap me on the shoulder and tell me he's flying to Paris and then ask me where was I going, Chicago? And then he would laugh like a roaring lion. He could be heard all over the crew's lounge.

After about the fifth time he did it, I told him very nicely that if he slapped me again on the shoulder, I was going to drop him. After that, he never spoke to me again. That was a bonus for me.

The ones I have blocked/ignored on here and on other sites are the folks who are all wrapped up in conspiracy theories, usually multiple theories, and just won't leave it alone. Their posts tend to be long, bizarre, meaningless rants they apparently believe proves them right. and are almost always dismissively rude to any post that doesn't support their slanted/biased point of view.

I just don't have the patience to deal with maroons anymore.

Sharing a different viewpoint on a forum can get you into an argument. If that happens and it seems the person is intractable, I will ignore them for a few days to see if their view changes.

Zero. Haven't really encountered anybody who's been a PITA that way, but even if I'd had, I'm not inclined to block/ignore. They can spout their stuff just like I can.

But if things go south, I'm inclined to engage -- at least for a little while.

Opinions vary about any given topic. It's entertaining to read what others opine on. As for trolls, they usually are gone in a short amount of time but while they post it's like reading a comic book.

The one person I put on ignore is gone now. I said this before, but I wanted to add that there are some posters I just ignore naturally. If they start a thread, I don't read it. If they respond to a thread, I usually skip it. At the moment, I'm wondering why the ignore function is even necessary.

Like in real life, if you don’t like someone just go past them. It’s easy enough to do.

Some folks are very sensitive.

My gosh! I just checked and I have 13 people on ignore. Probably half of them aren't here anymore.

I do it when I find their posts irritating for one reason or another and I just don't want to see them. No harm to them and it makes less stress for me. Some people you just don't want to deal with.

It's funny how you get to know people from their posts. Some are sweethearts, some are funny, some are thought provoking, but most are interesting. Nobody is perfect. But some are less perfect than others.

I'm also on a pipe smoking forum. You really have to have thick skin there; macho city.
