How many people here don't own a smartphone?

I have an old, cheap, smartphone but have never used it for such. I only carry a phone (unlike most of the world) when traveling in the U.S. in case of emergency. I refuse to be continually connected via phone and our family mostly communicates by email.
However, we travel a fair amount including overseas and must have a tablet.

I have an Alcatel smart flip. It can run KaiOs apps like games and things. But, no touch screen, just keys. It has Google assist and voice recognition so I don't have to type anything, like for texting. The only app I use much is the timer, which is handy when cooking something. It's small, rugged and works great as a phone.

It has a built in FM radio and a music player that I don't use. The camera is just 2 megapixels, but I don't take photos with it anyway. I don't use the browser. It does what I need and only cost me 60 bucks. And, I still have my wife's as a spare.

i got a dumb flip-fone....
My son had one when he was 12. His friend in school just got a new phone for 1000 euro and showed it to everyone. The newest thing. My son got a flip phone for seniors for 20 or 30 euro. He said to his friend: Hey but I have a real Denver and mine can flip and has a radio!

Unfortunately I have one. It's from the office. Can't just trow it away.

Interesting that you can tell what type of phone someone is using while they drive by. My iPhone connects to my car's sound systems so using it is hands free.

I likened changing from a Blackberry, which used to be all the rage, to an iPhone was like going from grammar school to college. My first and only iPhone was an iPhone 4. When that started dying, I got an Android phone free for switching to MetroPCS. Its camera was terrible though, so my husband gave me a Samsung phone for my birthday. That was over a decade ago and I've stayed with Samsung, which I like just as much as the iPhone.

I use my smartphone for so many things that I can't imagine being without it. A few uses: ordering Uber and Lyft rides, playing several games, calendar and timer alerts, calculator and other financial stuff, notepad (from which I text my son shopping lists), texting and other communication apps and camera. Using the Shazam app, I can even find out what song is playing when I'm out and about or watching a TV show and hear something I like. I've done that several times with songs I liked enough to purchase.

I'm not one...I love my Iphone.. I've had 5 different models over the years... upgrade every few years.... my current one is a 12 Pro so I'm overdue for a new one..
Same Holly. ❤️ I recently upgraded from the 12 Pro to the 15 Pro Max. I purposely don’t buy the latest….i save a few hundred when I buy a model or two before the latest release.

I am seldom without my phone because I pretty much run both my personal and professional life from/with it.

Exactly ! That's precisely what I do too....

I have a smartphone but rarely use it. I only have one because when I signed up for the internet, it was part of the package. On the other hand, I use a tablet a lot. It's like an encyclopedia....I'm constantly consulting it and I play games on it.

My late hubs bought the first iPhone when it was introduced. A few years later, I swapped it for the iPhone 3, which I still have -- it serves now as an iPod for music. I upgraded to the 6S; one morning, I woke up to find it had deactivated itself for no reason. Apple's response was, "They do that sometimes, sorry, can't help." Lost everything since I had not backed it up. I still have it and it works like a little computer using home wifi.

I then switched to the Samsung Android which I still use as a phone and for maps occasionally. It is probably seven years old, takes lousy pictures, and is s-l-o-w. I like the iPhone better but refuse to buy any more Apple products after that deactivation fiasco.

For years I had a flip phone and insisted that I don't need a smart phone. But when on vacation years ago, my flip phone stopped working and when I went o replace it, I was told it would be a big deal to get a flip phone since the store didn't carry them (?). So I let them talk me into a smart phone (android).

Well, I loved it! Getting the internet on my phone and having google maps give me directions was tremendous.
Later, I used it for work.
When I went to buy a laptop, I was able to do a banking transfer of the amount from my savings to my checking account and cover the cost right there in the store.

Like @Aunt Bea said, its a small, portable personal computer. Its convenience when shopping or other business is unmatched.

I'm almost ashamed to admit that I've become almost dependent on mine.
I use it for a phone and camera of course, but I also have my grocery list, Microsoft's authenticator app which I use for work. I have my banking app, solitaire, Facebook, Music, YouTube, I read books on it sometimes, use it to fly a drone, security cameras both at home and at work, credit card apps, weather, news, health care portal where I can check upcoming appointments, pay my bill, view test results, ask questions, etc.
I can program my electronic door locks with it, translate from dozens of different languages, both written and spoken. I can do my Amazon shopping, shop and set up a pickup at Wal-Mart, get a discount when I buy fuel, check my speedometer, order dog food, see what's coming in the mail that day, and I even used it for an Uber to rescue a stranded friend in Denver while I was snug and warm in Nebraska.
I can use it to identify what birds are singing around me, calculator, calendar, reminders, timer, stopwatch, and it works as a computer.
I have one game on it, solitaire, but I'd say most of what I use it for is practical.
Oh yeah, navigation

No smart phone. I barely know how to use a flip. I'd likely break it anyway with the hobbies that I have. I shove the flip in my pocket only when leaving the house (for emergencies).
When we travel, my wife uses her smart phone for navigating.

On the contrary, was an early adopter before the iPhone was released. Had a Palm Treo and a couple other early models. Losing digital signals outside of metro areas was common in those days. Presently using an iPhone 17 Pro. The camera is awesome. It’s fun using the AI features - like removing unwanted objects from a photo by circling them. Handy to take photos on quick notice without lugging a big ol’ Nikon w/accessories.
