How many surgeries have you had in your lifetime?

Now is your chance to brag!. Details optional, of course.

For me, it's four. First was at age six and it was by far the most difficult, not because it was a big deal medically, but because I was just a tiny kid.

Lots. As a child - tonsils and adenoids removed, nasal antrums washed out under general anaesthetic. As a younger woman - cauterisation of the tubes and removal of three separate skin cancers, one of which was an early melanoma. As an old woman six joint replacements - both knees, both hips and both shoulders.

That adds up to an even dozen.

Thanks be for the Australian system of health insurance and hospital subsidies.

Just the one, for an inguinal hernia, 13 years ago. Way back in the 50's / 60's there was 'fashion' for having tonsils unnecessarily removed to stop you getting tonsillitis. This was probably before it was recognised that they have a role in the immune system.

I have a small scar on my chest which I thought was a birthmark. As a child I used to have a dream, more a feint recollection, of a nurse in her crisp blue uniform and a doctor looking at my chest. I was only and infant in my cot, so only weeks or months old. Many years later - I don't know how the subject came up - my mother said that when I was born, I had a cyst on my chest, and had a small 'operation' to remove it.

Generally, people will say that you don't have memory of things very early in your life, although one GP agreed that some early trauma can leave lasting memories.

Made it 60 years with nothing but a few teeth pulled. Then one day I woke up from a 5 day induced coma with 4 surgeries and 8 units of blood under my belt, 7 more over the next 6 months. Will find out in a couple weeks if number 12 is needed. Plus they guarantied I will need a hip replacement within 10 years.
