How much should a pet canary cost?

I was looking at canaries in the hardware store (yes, our local HWS has a sideline of pets including rodents and reptiles). They had a male canary for $169.99, I thought that was a bit much for a little yellow bird. Is that actually reasonable?

Whoa! Last time I was in a pet store they were like $19.99 ... tells you how long ago that was, maybe 15 years ago.
I remember the last time I bought a parakeet it was around $15-$20. I have never had a canary, so I am not sure of the comparison in prices, but from what you saw, Sifu;it seems to me like they must be similar.
I would not buy any little bird for that much money ! I am sure there must be some on Craigslist that someone doesn't want anymore, that would be more reasonable, and probably comes cage and all besides.

I've never been much of a small-bird person myself - always had better luck with the larger ones, the parrots and such.

I had some finches once that I thought were overly sensitive - when I changed their water or the bottom of their cage they'd go crazy bashing themselves into the sides of the cage. I ended up thinking of them as chihuahuas with wings. :playful:

Phil, Parrot are know for owning pirates, so stick with them. How else are supposed to recognize you?
:hee::eek:k:

The one parrot that I had I had borrowed for a Renaissance fair from a friend. It was a big, beautiful red, gold and blue macaw that had already been trained to sit on a shoulder. He never caused me a single problem, even after 12 straight hours of drinking, looting and wenching.

In fact, he was a true wing-man when it came to procuring wenches. ;)

A lady bought a canary at the pet store, and a day or so later noticed that it's leg was injured and it was limping around the cage. She returned to the store with the bird and demanded her money back. The store owner looked at her and asked "What do you want...a singer or a dancer"? :)

Phil, Say it ain't so, I have this picture of you with that bird. So don't mess with the head:hit::tongue::hit:

No, it's true. The previous year I had used a stuffed parrot ("This parrot ... is dead!" jokes were in abundance that year), so I figured what the heck, why not try a live one.

Beside the poop on my pirate coat it was all uphill. ;)

If you want a Canary get a border roller.It as a rolling whistle that has to heard to believe.

The price in America is very steep. Try looking in bird books for private breeders They should be a lot less than you have quoted.
In England years ago we used to go to the local coal mine. where they were bred. If they had to many they gave them away.
