I'm old. I can remember when gas sold for less than $.30 a gallon and cigarettes sold for less than $.50 a pack and when I was a young boy our rent was $55.00 a month. Man do I feel OLD!
I was holding off posting because I wasn't sure I was remembering right, but I did run into a gas war traveling through Montana in the early 60s. It was near Billings, with a refinery 10 miles down the road, and I bought gas for 10 cents a gallon. I remember remarking to the attendant how flabbergasted I was by the price of gas. He nodded while looking down the road at a gas station about half mile away, and said, "Yeah, we're having a gas war with that guy. That was the first time I ever heard the term.10 cents during gas wars. 12 to 15 cents per gallon was common late 40s early 50s
Yeah, I seem to remember that gasoline shot up to $1.00 a gallon in north Calif, which we thought was robbery-- even if you could get it.I don't remember the prices but I remember the gas shortages in the early 70's. We had to wait in line to get gas and I was driving my father's car, which got a whopping 13 mpg!
