How Often Do You Visit Your Library?

I haven't been in our local library which has been in the same place since I was kid.
I don't see the need because I buy all my books either at our local independent bookstore where I am a member,or thru a catalog I've used for yrs.
When I'm finished reading,I take the books downstairs to our basement where there is a community library one of our residents takes care of.There are 2 boxes, one to donate books, the other to return them.It doesn't cost anything

:D I use my library card and spend the extra money on good chocolate. When I RV traveled and could not rely on a library, Barnes & Noble and Books-A- Million got way too much of my money. When I found Powell's in Portland OR I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I still sometimes buy from them when the library doesn't have it.

Others in my travel group knew where the good restaurants were. I knew where the good used book stores were all over the country.

I think I was about 8 years old when I first joined the library. None of my family were interested , but I loved to devour books from the time I learned to read.

I still remember the colour and the feel and colour of my little cardboard ticket back then (sometimes it would be pink other times blue) , and the stamping of the dates in the books, and when that got full they'd just add another page on top to stamp. I remember the wondrous musty smell of the books, I remember the peace and quiet... I remember as a teen studying in the library at school too

I always went to the public library alone as a child which was about a 15 minute walk from our house in a very busy city, and I'd come home with 3 books at a time and immediately start reading them..and as an adult I never lost the love for the library or my love of reading, in all it's formats but the older the book the better!!

I'd miss those old libraries.. I wish we could go back to those times..

To this day I always have a minimum of 2 books on the go at any one time . and never miss reading before I go to sleep!!

Really, really, well said!

I've also been an avid reader from the time I could first read. Our librarian, Miss Hicks, was so helpful, in the Children's Section, when I was there. PBS had a storytime show, and Miss Hicks asked me to be on it, when she was selected to read a Curious George book. I made my TV debut at, around, seven years old. Great fun!

I actually have a tough time understanding those who don't like reading books, especially at night, in bed, before lights out. What a perfect ending to a long day!

I am an avid reader, but don't go to the library much. I haunt used bookstores and buy 'em by the sackful, then take 'em back when I'm done. The store go to mostly gives you a credit when you bring them back and you can use the credit to pay for other books.

I can't do the e-reader thing. For me, it just isn't the same. I like a real book and turning the pages.

More often than I thought I would
One reason, they have free forms
Contracts, earnest money, etc

The other reason...my lady is a bibliophile

We go most everywhere together for two reasons;
1. We think each other is great company
2. I don't wanna spend the afternoon lookin' for her

She knows I put up with going to the library
But that doesn't hurry her any

One time I just sat on the bench somewhat near the librarian
Only, I somehow sat directly down...square on the boys
It was like a sledge hammer

Jumped straight up...screaming

Wife sez to the librarian, 'don't mind him, he just wants to go'

I'm in there every week and at any given time I have 4 or 5 books checked out. .
Our small town library used to be a refuge for the homeless too, however a few years back it was completely rebuilt and its new iteration has a much more open floor plan with no secluded places for them to hang out in. There are still a few of them who come to get warm in the winter or cool in the summer, but they're basically harmless and probably the more creepy types are not so comfortable with the new layout.
I've always considered libraries to be a personal sanctuary full of interesting things to read....ever since I was a boy. My family belonged to a club that occupied a floor of the Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank building and they had a library that I loved. There was a window in the children's section that overlooked the harbor.....those were good years and that spot occupies a special place in my heart. Alas, the building is gone now.
I read in bed every night too and eat a bar of milk chocolate as I read.

Using an e-reader became necessary for me when I developed severe arthritis in my hands. At first, I hated it because I too loved the feel and touch of real books but for me it became a matter of read in pain and drop the book or Kindle. I first tried to use paper backs but they were more difficult

I will Google Overdrive, Grammie. 🙂

You should, I love Overdrive. I was buying so many books, they were taking over the house. I'm so thankful for it.

Does anyone remember book mobiles? I was always front and center when they pulled up. There was one that stopped on the next street from my house. They even took requests.

I agree it's a great place to go but I haven't gone in many years now. I used to check out dvds by the dozen. We have a beautiful newish library here.

I so loved going to the library. For many years I lived close to the Hawaii State Main Library. And then I moved and it is harder to get there because I don't drive and the bus isn't that convenient. And then there's returning the books. The closest branch library is too far to walk. And then of course comes the homeless using the computers and everywhere to sit. I started feeling uncomfortable taking time in some some of the less used and out of the way stacks.

When I retired I got a new library card and thought I would really use the library for books. I like our downtown area (downtown mostly the financial center where I worked for many years, not the Waikiki area), It was fun walking around at my lunch breaks.

I do have some nostalgia for my working days. I now get most of my books from Amazon and Barnes and Noble (the last large bookstore left on these islands and I like to buy from them to keep support them). It's really sad how bookstores have been vanishing from our shores.

I go every week to borrow non fiction books, Cds & sometimes movies. I don't stay too long as the libraries here are very noisy. I miss the old days when you could sit there & read. Now, I just get my stuff & run out ASAP.

We still had them until 3 years ago, and then the council had to make big cuts in funding!! The elderly especially in the more remote villages have found having no mobile library very difficult!

I also use Overdrive and a new one called “Libby”. I am not sure how it is different from Overdrive, and I think that must do about the same thing.
I love reading (hate television), and have a 7” Kindle Fire and an 8”Kindle Fire that I use for reading. I like that I can set the print for the right size for me to easily see it. I also like the way it changes at night to the warmer softer color, that is supposed to be better for your eyes when reading at night.
It is really hard for me to see regular books well enough to read them, anymore, and the last one I bought (Hawaii by Michener), I ended up giving to my daughter because it was too hard for me to read the print.

I always use Bookbub and Book Gorilla for new (usually free) books, and belong to Amazon Kindle Unlimited, because they have a lot of great books that I would not read if I had to outright buy them.

Our library here is downtown, and in a lot of traffic to get to it, so even when I did read regular books, I usually got them somewhere else.

I go to the library pretty much weekly over the winter. I love to peruse magazines. Also like to read 'good' newspapers such as New York Times and Wall Street Journal. I can do a long walk to get to the library.

wow, I didn't know they were around anymore! They were great when I was a kid. We lived in a big city, and my parents didn't go to the library very often.

I am sure the elderly do miss it very much. What a shame they are gone. Maybe there needs to be a lending library? I've heard they work well, and it's nice for someone who needs something to do. Of course, it's not the same as the actual missing book mobile, but at least there's a book to read.

I've wondered about downloading Libby, but I like Overdrive so much that I'm afraid to make the change. I'm with you, it's nice to have the settings where you can make the print bigger. Mine is set fairly high, as I have bad eyesight.

I belong to Amazon Prime (for sending packages to my grandbabies far away!) and if I don't mind waiting a little longer, there is an option to accumulate digital data. I've used that to apply to the Kindle books I want to buy.

I've also bought books from Ebay. They are used, but most of the copies are almost in new condition. I've even gotten hardback books for just a few dollars. I set myself a limit and don't go over it! I found it's a great way to buy books.

There' still quite a lot of mobile libraries , not as many as there once was due to the aforementioned funding, and not in my county... but here's a typical type.. and interior from one of the mobile vans in the next county ...

download them to an ipad or kindle, and the print won't be a problem, you can enlarge or reduce the font at will!! :D
