How physically fit are you?

The history of fitness through Della.
Impressive and detailed history, hope you can find a way to walk without a cane. Is that possible?

My timeline is pretty simple:
  • Birth to age 66 fat most of the time.
  • Then for reasons still not clear to me I was able to successfully diet and lose over 200 lbs, also started going to a gym, walking and biking.
  • 66 to now (age 70), kept most of the weight off, up and down a little, but within a 30 lb range, and I have kept the exercise up.

Are you a gym rat? Do you have one of those treadmills-one you actually use? Are you a mall rat? Do you like to keep as fit as you can? Or, are you a confirmed couch potato?

fuzzybuddy, I get plenty of exercise at home every day. I do have a Treadmill and an exercise bike that I use everyday.

I also do a few exercises each day as well. I don't mind exercising, as I also listen to music, or I may watch TV while exercising.

I get out every day to a multi-storied shopping complex. I park my car on the rooftop then work my way down to the ground floor then back again. Do a little shopping and a quick coffee. By the time I get home I look at my phone which counts my steps and I usually do about 5,000 steps so that is enough for me. I bought a Cubii elliptical but it keeps sliding on my shiny tiles. I rang the place I bought it from, and they said they don't sell them anymore? Anyone know of what type of rubber mat I can get?

That is an incredible amount of weight loss, congratulations! To have kept it off you must have lost at a sensible rate. I hear 2 pounds/week is the maximum one should try for. Since retirement I’ve list 50 pounds in chunks of 20 something pounds per year for two years. I’m currently 10 pounds over my maximum low since losing what I did. I had been afraid it would be worse since my sciatica has been so bad but just 186 pounds as of yesterday. Woohoo!

They can be ordered from any company that supplies fitness equipment and are available in rolls or modular pieces and user assembled. Search for gym floors.

I don't go to a gym, but exercise every day. So I stay in pretty good shape, but I don't do it to build muscle or anything, just so I can do chores, cutting, loading, and splitting wood, etc..., without being sore. It takes discipline, but seems to work well, so no need to change.

bobcat, if your splitting wood, plus stacking it yourself. You indeed are getting plenty of exercise. As my husband does this as well, especially since my husband's been doing this for many years. We rely on wood heat during the winter months.

You're right, it is a workout, but it isn't something you do all year, so I rely mostly on the exercise regimen to stay in shape. The chores just aren't as taxing when your body is conditioned for them.

Most of us on this site are senior citizens. :)
Being fit is something in a relationship with your age, weight, height, mental agility and how often you have hit by pick-up trucks.
My age is 66, 160lbs. , 5'10", I think I'm intelligent (others may argue), and I've been hit by pick-up trucks twice. (auto accidents, drunk drivers! Not my fault..) I have survived with the help of some titanium in the spine and physical therapy.
Now I work out, I count calories and I get around 95% of the time without a cane (rainy weather messes with me)
Trying to exercise sounds painful to those who are in dire need of it. Start with simple basics, then challenge yourself daily to be better than yesterday.

Treadmills to me are physical and mental torture. But I love open road jogging and developed my own "old age" method where I keep my feet close to the ground to minimize back and knee impact. Also do shoulder and arm rubber band exercises 3 times per week.
I get my cardio in on ellipticals, I find it far more tolerable than the treadmill. Stationary bikes are also an option, but I prefer standing up and I need padded shorts to make it more than 15 mins on a bike seat.

againstthegrain, I don't mind being on the Treadmill 30-35 minutes each day. It's a must for me. My husband thought the Recumbent Bike would be good for the two of us as well. Before I had the Treadmill, I walked outside, and at times it was a bit too cold for me. And sometimes a bit too hot as well. So, I am appreciative I can exercise indoors. And doing this while watching TV or listening to music is an added plus.

I never abused my body with drugs or contact sports, so didn’t wind up like my nephews, one of whom has bad knees and the other minimal brain damage. Maintaining health can be a matter of what you don’t do as well as what you do. Outside of prostate issues, I’m in fairly good shape with good balance and the ability to walk for miles…

I use RealPlayer to download a ton of YouTube workouts geared toward 50+.

I am just starting to get back in shape after gaining 80 pounds in three years.

My nurse practitioner has limited me to 5 minutes cardio for 2 weeks, then 7 minutes for 2 weeks, then 10 minutes for 2 weeks, etc

I am also doing stretching and toning in addition to that little bit of cardio.

I am woefully out of shape right now after a few prior years of being very active. Determined to lose 55 pounds and build up to 30 minutes cardio.

Not as physically fit as I’d like to be. I’m on medication that has a main side effect of
weight gain. 🥴 Boo! Hizz! I’m exercising though to try and lose it.

I keep forgetting to walk backwards! I knew I'd forget! The little I've done has helped my knees more than cortisone or gel ever did. Maybe I'll tie a string around my finger? Remember doing that?

Hey, what's this string doing tied around my finger?

How physically fit are you?

Faster than a speeding ant. More powerful than a baby bird. Able to leap tall pencils with a single bound. (y)
