I watched a documentary last evening about the Bon Secours Nuns (French Order) translated means, Good Will. They ran an orphanage for unmarried mothers and babies., in Tuam - County Galway, Ireland. What happened there is unforgiveable. Unmarried mothers were shamed by everyone and were reported to the Parish Priest who visited their homes and told the parents how evil they were and were not permitted in the streets, when the birth was imminent, she was to be taken to the Tuam orphanage to have the baby.
She had to work in the laundries, and she could feed the child but only for a short time. The babies sometimes died, and others suffered severe malnutrition until they we adopted out. A mass grave was discovered in the 70's and an investigation was held. It was noted graves of some 800 infants were uncovered in a disused sewage tank. There was a big cover-up by the Church but on looking at some adoption papers the Order received enormous sums of money from adoptees in America. Of course, Order refused to be interviewed. Poor women had to bear the brunt whilst the men that made them pregnant walked away free.
