Unless an image is copyrighted, it can be used without permission, especially on the internet. Even if an image is copyrighted, it can also be used, even if there's monetary gain.
Years ago, someone used a pic of a piece of my artwork online as advertisement. I asked a lawyer friend if I could sue and she asked me how much my artwork was valued at, and how much the infringer made. I told her probably a couple of hundred, each. She said that that is how much I would get in a lawsuit, but it would cost me much more to file.
This is all in gold fun, anyway- something a cartoonist requires is a sense of humor.
