I am thinking of buying a used fiat. Any opinions on the car? Should I buy one?

I want a small car to run around my neighborhood in-not more than 25 mile radius. I test drove a fiat which seems perfect for me. It's small, easy for me to get in and out of (can't do bucket seats). A tank of gas might last me two weeks or more.

What do you think?

Depending on the year of the fiat and how the engine is. And, as long as you can find a repair shop that will fix any problems.

Many years ago, we owned a Fiat. We ended up selling it because of the high cost of repairs. I have no idea whether that is still true today. But better check out the repair shop situation.

Fiat doesn’t have a great rep history for durability

Not sure about nowadays

But that little 500 is keeee-ute!

Do some research on the Internet....i.e. Best and/or Worst Small Cars. At the minimum, take it to an independent mechanic and have a complete inspection done, before you buy. Here is one ranking of small cars....this one ranks the Fiat as being #34 out of 35 models.

We just gave our 2006 Toyota Corolla to my son. Over 250,000 miles on it. It required virtually no repairs, just routine maintenance and the occasional tires, battery, brakes, light bulbs, etc. It consistently got 35 mpg. That was just our experience, but my son's FIL had the same car ... same experience.

At least a 2015 or later model, probably a four door 500 series and hopefully a four wheel drive.

I have done done some research and it seems the one not to buy is the hatchback. This model seems to have a lot of issues. The problem with other small cars is that they have bucket seats. The fiat doesn't. It's very hard for me, nearly impossible, to get out of a bucket seat without assistance.

I probably should have it checked out by a mechanic before I buy, but doubt that I will. Cars are an emotional buy. There are some older models with low mileage, those make me nervous. (Power just went off, Internet down, lovely.). Although the Internet says its because people don't realize how small they are. When they do realize how small they are they trade them.

i think I should buy one with around 30000 to 50000 miles. At least it's made it that far, lol. What do you think?

Any small car that does not have bucket seat would do.

Hi Aneeda,

Fiat cut back their presence in the UK a few years ago
as they had a bad reputation, rust and breakdowns.

The new models seem to be OK though.

If you are looking at any small car, then SEAT and
SKODA are both VOLKWAGEN cars for many years
now and although they share all the engineering
applied to their own named cars with the others,
the Seat and Skoda are a lot cheaper.

They are worth a look, but I don't know what kind
of seats they have, might not be bucket types.

Mike.

2019 winners:
Honda and Kia tied for the most awards by any single brand, with three each. Honda won for the CR-V, Odyssey, and Fit. Kia won for the Soul, Sorento and Stinger. It’s the first win for the Stinger and the first win in a luxury class for Kia.

"Consumers may know Kia for its low prices, but this year's awards cement the brand's ascendance in the realm of quality," says Jamie Page Deaton, executive editor of U.S. News Best Cars. "Tying Honda and surpassing Toyota in the number of awards won is a significant achievement. The Kia Soul, Sorento and Stinger are all different, yet each delivers what shoppers in their respective classes are looking for. Honda's winning models, the CR-V, Odyssey and Fit, continue to provide the utility consumers expect from the brand, as well as the latest in infotainment and safety features."

Lol seems like I need to stop looking at a fiat, and start looking at something else. Thanks everyone!

I don't know if you have this where you live, but here I can go online and check dealers' inventories of used cars, along with pictures of them, what amenities they have, mileage, etc. It was a big help when I unexpectedly had to buy a car several years ago. I was able to narrow it down to only two places I had to beg rides to.
