Laid all my products on the conveyor ready to be scanned, with my shopping bag first. Bread last.
You can guess what happened.
Bag was placed, all the products were scanned, but not immediately placed in the bag.
So, when it came to the bread which was scanned last, the cashier squashed it through grabbing it too hard, then put in the bag first and was about to pile everything else on top.
"Stop right there, before we go any further, I will now go and get a fresh loaf of bread because you just squashed that one. While I am gone, you can load the heavy items in the bag first then the rest on top"
I got "The Look"
When I returned with the bread I asked her to be gentle with and hand it to me when scanned thank you.

Why is it so difficult?

It's not their groceries so they don't care. I get melted ice cream a lot when I order mine online. As much as I hate to say it, we are now living in a society where people are no longer serving customers. They're just there punching the time card, doing their 8 hrs. and shuffling off to their lives afterwards.

We are an interruption to the day they'd rather be spending at home rather than taking care of us. Plus it's not easy to tolerate the general public in the service industry because the public can be quite nasty and sometimes it's uncalled for.

What I do is hang on to my bread products til the last. Then I lay it on the belt and as it's coming to them I ask them to please bag my bread separately from the other groceries. Then I make sure I take possession of that bag immediately. That usually takes care of it.

I just thought it was common knowledge. Surely they are taught how to pack groceries?
I agree that much of the service industry do not care. Clock in, clock out.

I do the same thing with bananas— prefer not to have banana pudding when I get home šŸ˜‹

You are a great self advocate!

The children of today are taught not very much, I am afraid, they
are not even shown how to tell the time on a conventional clock
that has hands and numbers and sometimes Roman numerals.

All children know when they are young, here at least, is how to
find the games or cartoons on Smartphones and Tablets, so as
they grow up they don't learn much more, in most cases.

Cashiers don't pack bags here unless we ask for help... we pack our own bags...
Holly speaks truth. I was surprised at that when we went to England and some smaller stores expect you to bring your own bags. One of the little neighbor girls would go to the farm store for her mother everyday. I once saw her walking home with several strips of bacon hanging over her arm. šŸ˜

I went to Kroger yesterday and picked up a large beautiful mum with a feathery thing sticking out the top and put it in my cart. When we got to the checkout I told the clerk how much it cost, but she wanted to run her gadget over the bar code so she tipped the plant on its side and turned it around so that the metal cart edge crushed the bottom six inches of the plant all the way around. I was gobsmacked. I told her I had changed my mind and didn't want it after all. Then she told the bag boy that he had to carry it back because [in a sing song voice] "She changed her mind."

Is that for real ?.. Children not being taught how to read an analogue clock ?

You mean it's a mini mart.. and you know exactly what I mean.. Supermarkets are Major stores... not franchised mini marts like Spar... ... who don't generally have checkouts, but just a tell and a counter where they HAVE to put the carrier bag to fill it because there's no other space as there is in Supermarkets.. Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury, Waitrose.. et al...do not pack bags for you.. and you know that ...jeeze talk about being pedantic for no reason whatsoever..

No. It is still on the National Curriculum that children are taught to tell time using analogue and digital. They also have to be taught Roman numerals. I have three grandchildren, the eldest one loves his computer games/smart phone etc. but prefers to wear an analogue watch to tell the time. Middle one prefers digital, youngest one has always loved numbers/mathematics and is very good whether it's digital, analogue, Roman or 24 hour.

Since so many people left the workforce, those who do have jobs are sometimes lazier than usual.. a few days ago, for example, I went to the convenience store and found a sign on the door saying it was closed.. another customer was equally confused. I went on a local message board, and was told whenever the manager didn't want to go in to work she didn't bother.

Most places are working short handed and people are exhausted as well because most of our workforce is sitting at home playing video games and getting unemployment. Since we don't have enough staff and aren't allowed to have enough staff we get 8 days of vacation a yr. The rest of our ETO gets sold. I get one week twice a year IF I'm lucky. That's not much when you're already tired. People are getting burnt out. They're tired of bosses crapping all over them as well as fellow employees. It's just gotten to be too much for a lot of us.

@JaniceM I'm assuming you're retired. I'm not. I still work. I gotta tell ya just based on what I've been through in the past 3 yrs with Covid and my job that it was the most stressful time of my life. I'm not making excuses for sour sackers with bad attitudes who don't know how to bag bread. I'm just saying that life and work have been exhausting and traumatic for many in the work force. I think people are having a hard time dealing with things in general.

No, I'm not retired, but I've worked from home for many years.

I do understand what you're saying, but laziness is basically a way-of-life around here. Plus the store I mentioned has never seemed to have a shortage of employees- if the one didn't want to show up, she should have called someone else to fill in.
